Gomez Leads Swimming And Diving With Four Victories At Sonny Werblin Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Jonathan Gomez (Cali, Columbia/Patrick Henry [Va.]) continued his impressive first collegiate swimming weekend with four wins to pace the Saint Peter's swimming and diving team at the Sonny Werblin Invitational on Saturday.

After winning the 500 free (4:42.77) and placing second in the 200 IM (1:57.88) on Friday, Gomez won the 200 back (1:40.13) and the 200 fly (1:54.84) while helping the 200-medley relay (1:40.13) and the 200-free relay (1:29.92) to first-place finishes.

Gomez led off the 200-medley relay before Sean Dunne (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), Alejandro Rubin Panvini (Caracas, Venezuela/San Ignacio) and Trey McGraw (Berkley, W. Va./Patrick Henry) wrapped up the victory while McGraw started the winning 200-free relay and was followed by Gomez, Manuel Garcia (Mexico City, Mexico/The American School Foundation A.C.) and Dunne.

Dunne recorded the other victory on the men's side with a first-place standing in the 100 free (48.94) and the sophomore also finished fifth in the 200 fly (2:00.88). Garcia placed fourth in the 100 free (49.84) and ninth in the 200 fly (2:01.96) while McGraw was fifth in the 200 back (2:04.22) and Rubin Panvini finished sixth in the 200 fly (2:01.41) and ninth in the 100 free (50.55).

Nicholas Reipe (Middlesex, N.J./Saint Joseph) placed second in the 1650 free (16:32.45) and seventh in the 200 fly (2:01.74). Omar Hassan (Bayonne, N.J./High-Tech) placed seventh in the 200 back (2:06.30) and Paolo Jimenez (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) was eighth in the 200 breast (2:27.62).

On the women's side, freshman Matea Samardzic (Split, Croatia/Ekonowsko Biotehnicka Skola), won the 200 back (2:04.22), was a member of the winning 200-medley relay (1:50.60), swam in the third place 200-free relay (1:41.83) and placed seventh in the 100 free (55.19).

Samardzic opened the 200-medley relay and was followed by Alexandra Sison (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy), Christina Decisneros (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) and Rachel Wuko (Wildwood Crest, N.J./Wildwood Crest) in the winning relay. Wuko opened the 200-free relay and was followed by Sison, Samardzic and Marie Feneron (Griesheim pres Mdsheim, France/Lycee Henri Meck).

Anastasiia Mushtei (Dneiptopnovsh, Ukraine/Finans Deukomi) notched the other first-place finish for the women's swimming and diving team after the freshman won the 1650 free (17:29.24) while also finishing seventh in the 200 breast (2:33.05).

Wuko finished second in the 100 free (53.75) while Sison placed fourth in the 200 breast (2:27.60) and Decisneros was fourth in the 200 fly (2:13.71) and Sison placed fourth in the 200 breast (2:27.60). Christina Petrelis (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) placed fourth in the 200 fly (2:17.07)

Saint Peter's returns to action when it makes its 2013-14 Yanitelli Center Pool debut against Stevens Institute on Oct. 26.
