Box Score KENT, OHIO – Kent State defeated Saint Peter's 75-58 in non-conference men's basketball action on Sunday.
Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordam]) paced the Peacocks (0-3) with 15 points and six rebounds. Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) tallied a career-high nine points and eight assists while Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, Pa./Math, Civics and Science Charter) added 10 points while and Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) chipped in nine points in the loss.
Mark Henninger paced the Golden Flashes (2-2) with 13 points while Darren Goodson and Kris Brewer each added 12 points in the winning effort.
Saint Peter's gave Kent State a good battle for most of the first half before the Golden Flashes went on a run to end the first stanza and never looked back for its third win against the Peacocks.
Trailing 19-13, Kent State used a 20-10 run to take a 33-29 lead going into the locker room.
Brewer started the spurt by making the frontend of two free throws and then the Golden Flashes secured the rebound and Brewer nailed a trey at 11:43 to trim the margin to 19-17. Dominique and Welton each made a basket for the Peacocks sandwiched in between two charity tosses by Kellon Thomas to maintain a two-point margin with 8:42 left in the first half.
Kent State then went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take its first advantage since the first minute of the game. Goodson, Brewer and Henninger each made jumpers in the span before Devareaux Manley capped the spurt with a 3-ball at 5:08 for a 28-23 lead.
Dominique and Jamel Fields (Albany, N.Y./Cheshire Academy [Fairfield]) answered for the Peacocks with baskets before Henninger and Welton traded points to keep it a one-point game with 2:42 on the clock, but Henninger scored in the paint and Chris Ortiz made 1 of 2 at the line to give the Golden Flashes a four-point edge at the break.
Saint Peter's jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the contest thanks to five 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes of the game.
With Kent State holding a 5-2 edge, Welton started an 8-0 run with a layup at 18:32 before Wyche nailed a trey at 17:44 and Chris Burke (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) followed with one of his own at 16:45 for a 10-5 margin.
After Henninger scored on a tip-in at 16:30, Washington drilled a triple at 15:58. Goodson came back with a layup at 15:25 before Washington dialed downtown again at 15:09 for a 16-9 advantage.
K.K. Simmons and Goodson recorded back-to-back baskets to cut the margin to 16-13 before Fields drained a 3-ball at 12:07 for a 19-13 advantage. The Peacocks had six 3-pointers in their first two games and nearly matched that total in the first eight minutes against the Golden Flashes.
Kent State then went scored 20 of the final 30 points in the first half to take the lead it would not relinquish.
The Golden Flashes maintained a four-point edge through the first five minutes of the final frame before going on a 22-6 run to grab a 66-46 advantage with 4:50 remaining. Tabb paced the run with seven points while Henninger added five points. The spurt included a 12-0 run by Kent State that was stopped by Wyche's traditional 3-point play with 4:32 on the clock. The Golden Flashes went on for the 75-58 victory.
Kent State improves to 3-0 against Saint Peter's, but Sunday's meeting marks the first game on either team's home court. The previous two tilts came in tournaments in Michigan and Utah.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Saturday at Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time is 7 p.m.
