Navy Downs Women's Basketball, 70-51

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in non-conference action Tuesday night against Navy, 70-51.

Bridget Whitfield (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) paced the Peacocks with 13 points in the contest. Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Dwight School) finished in double-figures, with 10 points. Kaydine Bent (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) notched nine points and a team-best five rebounds.

In the first half, both teams exchanged points with Navy out in front, 6-4. Back-to-back three-point field goals from Kara Pollinger gave Navy the 12-4 advantage. Kaycee DeVoogd (Edison, N.J./New Providence) notched her first collegiate points, scoring a layup to cut the lead. Navy would counter with a layup from Jade Geif and a three-pointer from Audrey Bauer to give the Midshipmen a 19-8 lead.

Following a timeout by the Peacocks, Smith hit a three-pointer and later a free throw to cut Saint Peter's deficit to single digits. Saint Peter's would continue to battle back, behind layups from Aziza May (South Euclid, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) and Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt/Modern Narmer Language School). A Whitfield three-pointer would cut Saint Peter's deficit to four points. Navy would respond on the following possession, with Chloe Stapleton hitting a three-point jump shot to hold a 26-19 lead. Following a layup by Neechelle Ingram (Pocono Summit, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), Navy would counter with another three from Pollinger. Navy would take a 33-22 advantage into halftime.

Pollinger led all scorers at halftime with 13 points on five-out-six shooting. Bent led the way for the Peacocks, with seven rebounds and five assists.

In the second half, Whitfield started it off for Saint Peter's hitting a jump shot on the team's opening possession. Navy would respond with a made jump shot, followed by a Smith jump shot to keep the deficit within single digits. A pair of free throws from Pollinger gave Navy a 38-26 lead. Alix Membrano would heat up for Navy, hitting back-to-back jump shots to open up the lead to double-digits.  Bauer would join in the action, hitting a pair shots of her own to give Navy a 51-37 lead. 

The second half for Navy would belong to Membrano, as she continued hit shots from beyond the arc. With the score 54-38, a pair of free throws by DeVoogd and jump shots by Smith and May cut Saint Peter's deficit to 13. Navy would counter, scoring five straight points behind a jump shot by Pollinger and a layup by Geif. Navy would not look back, winning the game 70-51.

Membrano and Geif scored in double-figures in the second half to help lift Navy. Whitfield finished perfect from the field in the second half, making all of her jump shots.

Navy finished with three scorers in double-figures. Saint Peter's was outrebounded 39-22 in the contest.

With the loss, Saint Peter's falls to 0-3 on the year.

Saint Peter's returns to action Nov. 23, when they welcome Sacred Heart University to the Yanitelli Center for non-conference action.
