Velasquez Scurries Home To Lead Softball Past Youngstown State, 6-5; Peacock Fall To Utah Valley In Opener

ORLANDO, Fla. – Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning to hand Saint Peter's a 6-5 victory against Youngstown State at the Rebel Games in non-conference softball action on Wednesday. The Peacocks (3-16) lost 12-3 in five innings in the opener against Utah Valley.

With the game tied at 5, Velasquez reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Tinajero (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Park) and to third on a Taylor Corretjer (Theills, N.Y./North Rockland) groundout to second before touching home on a passed ball to give Saint Peter's the 6-5 edge. In the seventh, hurler Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) induced a groundout to Velasquez at third, a comebacker back to the mound and a pop out to Corretjer at second to end the game and secure the Peacocks third win of the season.

Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) paced Saint Peter's in the two games with three hits and three RBIs. Harrison also had three hits including a solo homer and two RBIs while Chelsea Crews (Seattle, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) and Alexis Gallagher (Narvon, Pa./Garden Spot) each recorded two hits and an RBI on the afternoon.

In the second game, the Peacocks rallied to tie the game and then scored in the sixth inning to secure the victory against Youngstown State.

Harrison got the scoring started with a home run to lead off the bottom of the first.

The Penguins answered with three runs in the third to take a 3-1 advantage.

Saint Peter's pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead at 4-3. Gallagher started the rally when she reached on an error and came home to score on D'Amato's RBI single. After Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) put runners at the corners on a single, Crews plated D'Amato on an RBI single to tie the game at 3. Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, Calif./Caldwell College) plated Olmedo with the go-ahead run on a single through the left side.

The Peacocks added a run in the fourth when Corretjer reached on a bunt base hit and moved to third on an error on the play and touched home on Gallagher's RBI groundout to increase the lead to 5-3.

Youngstown State scored a run in the fifth and the sixth to tie the contest at 5, but Velasquez scored on a passed ball to give the win to Saint Peter's.

Harrison came in relief and picked up the victory on the hill.

In the opener, Utah Valley downed the Peacocks 12-3 in five innings.

Utah Valley scored once in the first and 11 times in the second for its 12 runs.

The Peacocks got on the scoreboard in the second with two runs. Gallagher opened the rally with a bunt single and moved up on a single to left by Harrison before D'Amato plated both runners with a double.

Saint Peter's added a run in the third.  Tinajero reached on an error before Gallagher singled and Harrison plated Tinajero on an RBI single to trim the margin to 12-3.

Shelby Beaver (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) took the loss against Utah Valley.

The Peacocks continue play at the Rebel Games on Thursday against Albany at 9 a.m. and against Lehigh at 1 p.m.
