Box Score 2 DOVER, Del.- The Saint Peter's University baseball team (4-6) dropped a doubleheader this afternoon to Delaware State (7-5) by scores of 14-0 and 5-1.
Zach Hopf (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) gave up 11 hits, seven runs (six earned) in five innings to receive the game one loss.
The Peacocks managed just 5 hits in the opening game, led by Matt Speckmann's (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) 2-for-3 performance.
Matt Mancini (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Nicholas Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each went 1-for-4 to record the last two Peacock hits.
Six Hornets finished with multi-hit games, led by J.P. Frey, who finished 3-for-4. As a team, the Hornets recorded 18 total hits.
Delaware State scored five in the first and added one run in each of the third, fourth and six innings. The hosts added six more runs in the seventh.
Ed Mejias (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Jeffrey Miller (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) each saw time in relief of Hopf. Mejias was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits in one inning, while Miller gave up four walks, two runs and two hits in two innings.
Saint Peter's looked to bounce back in the second contest, collecting eight hits in the game to DSU's nine. Mancini, William Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) and Gerard DeFilippo (East Hanover, N.J./DePaul Catholic) each recorded two hits.
The visitors scored first in the opening frame to take a 1-0 advantage. Mancini singled to second to start off the inning, followed by a base hit by Rawson. A sacrifice bunt by Henriquez moved the runners to second and third, paving way for an RBI groundout by Speckmann to bring home Mancini. A flyout by James Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) ended the inning for Saint Peter's.
DSU was able to even the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Ryan Haas. The Hornets went on to add a run in the next inning and three in the third to close out the win.
Mathew Yuhas (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) tossed six innings for the Peacocks and gave up all five runs on nine hits to recieve the loss.
Aaron Nardone led the Hornets going a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, while driving in three runs and scoring two.
The Peacocks close out the three-game series against the Hornets tomorrow, with a single game at 1pm.
