Softball Falls To Niagara Twice

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Niagara took two games from Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball action on Monday. The Purple Eagles (9-25, 6-6 MAAC) took the opener 5-0 and then on won the nightcap 10-2 in six innings.

Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) paced the Peacocks (7-38, 1-7 MAAC) with four hits including a solo home run. Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) added three hits and an RBI and Aimee Schnecker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) added a hit and a run scored in the nightcap.

Alexis Wayne fueled Niagara with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Brittany Richberg added three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs and Gabby Lustinelli posted three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

In the nightcap, Saint Peter's jumped on the board with a run in the first after Olmedo kept up her hot-hitting ways with a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 edge. The Purple Eagles then scored the next five runs to take a 5-1 advantage.

Katelyn Gruarin coaxed a bases loaded walk in the second and Becky Zill doubled home two runs to give Niagara a 3-1 edge. Lustrinelli added two runs in the fourth on a two-run single through the right side for a 5-1 margin.

The Peacocks responded with a run in the fifth to trim the margin to 5-2. Schnecker opened the fifth with a single up the middle and moved to third on a pair of groundouts before D'Amato singled through the left side to plate Schnecker.

The Purple Eagles added two runs in the fifth courtesy of RBIs by Richberg and Wayne to increase the margin to 7-2 before Desarae Maldonado doubled home a run and Amanda Werth smacked a two-run double to end the game after six innings with a Niagara 10-2 victory.

Tori Feorenzo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) took the loss in the second game.

Niagara won the opener 5-0 after scoring five times in the second. Richberg doubled home two runs to get the scoring started before Gruarin double in a run and Wayne capped the inning with a two-run two bagger. 

Saint Peter's best threat in the first game came in the seventh inning. Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, Calif./Caldwell College) doubled to left field to open the inning and Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.J./John Jay) reached on an infield single, but a double play and strikeout ended the game.

Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) was the only Peacocks player to reach third base in the contest after she walked to start the fourth. The freshman moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a two-out single by Shelby Beaver (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) before a pop out ended the threat.

Erica Colon  (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) took the loss for Saint Peter's.

The Peacocks return home to start a five-team nine-game homestand to close out the year against Delaware on Wednesday. Game time is 3 p.m.
