Jersey City, N.J. – The Saint Peter's men's tennis team opened up their 2013 season with a 4-3 victory against Fordham on Saturday afternoon.
The match was decided by freshmen Jorge Del Rey Rios, winning the decisive point in his debut at Saint Peter's. He won his match, 6-4, 7-5.
Sophomore Carlos Carrera set the tone for the Peacocks; defeating Kuba Koualski (6-1, 6-4) in a rematch of last season in which he was defeated.
Junior Fabian Valdiviezo defeated his opponent Michael Puntillo in his singles contest, 6-1, 7-6. Tom Jottrand played well in his Saint Peter's singles debut, winning his match against J.J Tauil, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, Fordham would win two of the three matches. Senior Mario Huljev and freshman Lukas Whaley won the Peacocks lone doubles match.
With the win, Saint Peter's improves to 1-0 on the season.
The Peacocks return to action Sept. 20, when they compete in the USTA Invitational.
