Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy defeated Saint Peter's 71-35 in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon.
Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt / Modern Narmer Language School) paced the Peacocks (0-9) with a season-high 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, Pa. / Pennsbury) finished with six points and six rebounds while Antonia Smith (Bronx, N.Y. / Dwight School) tallied five points in the losing effort.
Navy (6-5) had three players finish in double-figures. Sarita Condie finished with a team-high 14 points while Peri Cutis recorded 12 points.
Navy used a series of runs in the first half to pull away and not look back to earn its sixth victory of the season.
Saint Peter's opened up with a basket from Samantha Meier (Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan) off an assist from Teresa Corchado (Willingboro, N.J. / Camden Catholic) to take a 2-0 lead. Navy countered, going on a 15-0 run over an eight-minute stretch, fueled by three 3-pointer baskets.
The Peacocks stopped the run with a jumper from Mostafa at 11:33. Following another trey from the Midshipmen to take an 18-4 lead, Saint Peter's used a 6-0 run to cut into the margin. The run was fueled by two baskets from Bethea. Navy responded with a 9-0 run, capped off by a 3-ball from Justice Swett at the 3:57 mark to lead 29-10.
The Peacocks cut into the deficit with three straight points from Smith to trail 29-13 with 2:35 remaining in the half. The Midshipmen countered with 10 unanswered points to extend their lead, 39-13. The Peacocks capped off the first half with a 3-pointer from Bridget Whitfield (San Diego, Calif. / La Costa Canyon) at the buzzer to trail 39-16 heading into halftime.
The two teams opened up the second half exchanging baskets. Following a 3-pointer from Chloe Stapleton, the Peacocks cut into the margin with consecutive baskets from Mostafa to trail 44-22. After a traditional 3-point play from Muenster at 14:27, Smith nailed a basket at 14:17 to trim the Navy lead.
The Midshipmen outscored the Peacocks 24-11 in the final 14 minutes to pick up the 71-35 victory.
Corchado notched a season-best four assists while Meier recorded four rebounds and one block. Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) tallied four points and four rebounds.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Dec. 28, when the team starts a three-game home stand beginning with Lafayette. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
