Men's Basketball Falls At Manhattan, 64-49

RIVERDALE, N.J.– Manhattan defeated Saint Peter's 64-49 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.

Junior Marvin Dominique (Miramar, Fla./Miramar [Fordham]) paced the Peacocks (7-14, 3-9 MAAC) with 15 points and nine rebounds to narrowly miss his ninth double-double of the season. Desi Washington (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin [Delaware State]) chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Shane Richards fueled the Jaspers (15-6, 8-4 MAAC) with 13 points. Ashton Pankey added 12 points and eight rebounds while George Beacon recorded 10 points and seven rebounds in the winning effort.

Manhattan jumped out the early advantage and held off a second-half charge from Saint Peter's to complete the season sweep.

Fueled by five points from Rhamel Brown, the Jaspers jumped out to a 16-6 advantage in the first seven minutes of the game. The Peacocks trimmed the margin to single digits a couple of times, but with the score 21-12 in favor of Manhattan Beamon nailed a 3-pointer at 7:57 and Michael Alvarado scored in the lane with 6:56 left in the half to hand the Jaspers a 26-12 margin on their way to a 32-20 lead going into the locker room.

Saint Peter's used an 11-4 run to start the second half to trim the margin to 36-31 with 13:55 left.

After Pankey scored in the lane with 19:41 left, Washington nailed a 3-pointer at 18:19 and drilled a jumper with 17:35 on the clock to cut the deficit to 34-25.

Rich Williams momentarily halted the Peacocks run with a layup at 17:21 before Saint Peter's scored the next six points to make it a five-point game. Dominique hit a jumper at 16:06, Elias Desport (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasum) scored off the glass at 15:19 and Kris Rolle (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Donovan [Colby CC]) capped the spurt with a layup at 13:55 to trim the margin to 36-31.

RaShawn Stores answered with a 3-pointer at 12:18 to give the Jaspers an eight-point margin. With Manhattan holding a 41-33 advantage, Saint Peter's scored five of the next seven points to cut the score to 42-38 with 9:35 on the clock.

Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made two free throws at 10:21 before Stores made 1 of 2 at the line at 9:59. Trevis Wyche (Neptune, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) converted a traditional 3-point play on a layup and free throw at 24 seconds later to make it a four-point game.

Brown answered with a dunk at 9:13 and 3-balls from Richards and Beamon restored a double-digit lead at 50-38 with 7:05 left and the Peacocks could not cut it to single digits the rest of the way.

The game was rescheduled from Monday due to inclement weather.

Saint Peter's returns to action when the squad starts a two-game homestand against Siena on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
