Softball Edges UMES 6-5, For First Victory Of The Season

CONWAY, S.C – The Saint Peter's softball team split its season-openers with a loss against Coastal Carolina and a victory against Maryland Eastern-Shore at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Saturday. The squad is now 1-1 after day one of the 2014 campaign.

Coastal Carolina defeated Saint Peter's, 18-0, in what was the season-opener for the Peacocks and the 13th game for the Chanticleers.

The Peacocks rebounded in its second game against UMES, defeating the Hawks, 6-5.

Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) had a solid outing against the Hawks, notching five strikeouts in a complete game effort for the Peacocks.

Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) finished with one hit and two runs scored. Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) recorded one hit, one run scored and one RBI in the victory.

Saint Peter's got on the board in the first inning with a homerun from D'Amato to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead. An error by UMES allowed for Harrison and Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) to round the bases to give Saint Peter's a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Maryland Eastern-Shore responded in the bottom of the third inning. Following an error by the Peacocks, the Hawks put up three runs to tie the game.

The Peacocks regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Following a single from Harrison, Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) singled into center field to allow Harrison to score to give Saint Peter's the 4-3 advantage. During the following at-bat, Colon hit a 2-run homerun to extend the Peacocks' lead, 6-3.

UMES did not go away, hitting a homerun in the bottom of the sixth to close the deficit. The Hawks scored again in the bottom of the seventh, but a line out double play ended the game and secured the Peacocks' first victory of the season.

The team returns to action tomorrow for a two-game slate against Marshall and Samford.
