Delaware State Takes Two From Saint Peter's Baseball

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday. The Hornets won the opener 13-7 and then took the nightcap 8-6.

Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) paced the Peacocks (2-7) with four hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) added a hit, two runs scored and four RBIs while Jim Smith (Hatfield, Pa,/North Penn) posted two hits and two runs scored and Vinny Maietta (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Marys) had two hits and two RBIs on the afternoon.

Richard Rodriquez fueled Delaware State (7-2) with three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs while Cameron Cecil registered four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs and Aaron Nardone posted two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the two games.

In the opener, the Hornets scored seven of the first eight runs and held off a late rally to earn the 8-6 seven inning win.

Ron Farley scored the first run on a wild pitch and Mike Alexander coaxed a bases loaded walk to cap a two-run second to give Delaware State an early 2-0 advantage.

Saint Peter's got on the scoreboard in the third to cut the margin to 2-1. Sean Henry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) doubled to right and came around to score on Ariel Ramirez's (San Domingo, Dominican Republic/Babeque) single up the middle.

The Hornets added five runs in the fourth to extend their margin to 7-1. A bases loaded hit by pitch and walk brought home the first two runs before Mitchell Moore and Farley each hit run-scoring singles and DJ Miller plated the fifth run in the stanza on an RBI double.

The Peacocks responded with a four-run sixth to trim the deficit to 7-5. Ramirez started the rally with a single before Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) doubled and Ramirez touched home when Moore reached on an error. After an out, Smith reached on a walk and Hugg plated Kristoffersen on an RBI double to left center. Maietta and Henry each coaxed bases loaded walks to cap the inning and make it a two-run game.

Miller hit an RBI single up the middle to give Delaware State an 8-5 margin after six innings before Kristoffersen was hit by a pitch and Hugg smacked his second double of the game to bring home the sophomore to set the final score at 8-6.

John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) took the loss in the nightcap.

In the opener, the game was scoreless for the first four innings before the two teams combined for 12 runs in the fifth with the Hornets coming up with a 9-3 lead at the end of the frame en route to a 13-7 victory.

Ramirez and Kristoffersen each singled with two outs in the fifth before Moore smacked an Earl Weaver three-run homer special to give Saint Peter's a 3-0 lead.

The lead was short lived after Delaware State scored nine times in the bottom of the frame.

Dailey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the first run before Cecil hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 3. Rodriquez gave the Hornets the lead for good on a three-run homer. After Eddie Sorondo doubled home a run, Miller and Dailey each singled home a run to cap the nine-run stanza.

Saint Peter's came back with two runs in the eighth. Hugg doubled to center and Nick Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) reached on a fielder's choice before Hugg scored on a fielder's choice and Zach Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) plated a run on an RBI fielder's choice to cut the margin to 9-5.

Delware State answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 13-5 advantage. Nardone singled home two runs and Sorondo hit an RBI single while a second run came across on the play.

The Peacocks scored twice in the ninth to set the final score at 13-7. After Moore was hit with a pitch and Smith doubled to left center before Hugg plated Moore on a sacrifice fly to left and Maietta singled through the left side to bring home Smith.

Zach Hopf (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) took the loss in the first game.

Saint Peter's and Delaware State conclude the three-game series on Monday with a nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
