Saint Peter's Softball Completes Sweep Of Lafayette On Wednesday; Alyssa Ruiz Picks Up First Collegiate Win On The Mound

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Lafayette on Wednesday. The Peacocks took the opening contest 7-4 and won the second game 7-3.

Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) fueled the Peacocks with two RBI and two runs scored in the opening contest. Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and Stephanie Gilronan (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) each added two RBI.

Jenna Kulback amassed two hits, one run and one RBI for the Leopards while Kelly Lallis, Stephanie Schreiber and Jenna Orlando all chipped in with one RBI.

Saint Peter's used a five-run sixth inning to pull away for the 7-4 victory.

Lafayette got on the board first in the second inning, powered by a RBI double from Kulback. The Leopards scored again in the fourth inning, following a based loaded walk to give Lafayette a 2-0 advantage.

The Peacocks knotted the game at two in the fifth inning, following a RBI triple from D'Amato. Lafayette countered in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Saint Peter's bats came alive in the sixth, following a RBI single from Velasquez to score two runners and tie the game at fourth. Next at bat, Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) hit the go-ahead RBI to score Velasquez. The following at-bat, Gilronan hit a RBI triple to right field to advance two more runners and secure a 7-4 victory.

Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) picked up the win, pitching six innings and recording four strikeouts. Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) earned her first collegiate save in the contest, allowing zero hits in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Kristi Kaneyuki (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado) powered the Peacocks with three hits and two RBI in the victory.

Saint Peter's took a 2-0 edge in the third inning, fueled by a RBI through the left side from Michelle Tinajero (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Park).

Lafayette countered in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs off a sacrifice fly from Orlando and an error by the Peacocks to tie the game at two.

The Peacocks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run off a RBI up the middle from Chelsea Crews (Seattle, Wash./Mountlake Terrace).

Saint Peter's scored four more times in the sixth inning. Carlucci drew a based loaded walk to score one run. A few batters later, Kaneyuki ripped the ball in left field to score two runs before Colon singled through the left side to give the Peacocks a 7-2 lead.

The Leopards scored one run in the top of the seventh, but Saint Peter's held on to complete the two-game sweep.      

Alyssa Ruiz (Howell, N.J./Howell) picked her first collegiate victory in the contest, while Colon earned the save.

With the wins, Saint Peter's improves to 9-27 overall while Lafayette falls to 5-27. The Peacocks are now winners of five of its last six contests. This is also the first time Saint Peter's softball has swept two series in the same season since 2007.

The squad returns to action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader against Columbia. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
