Columbia Takes Two From Saint Peter's Softball On Thursday

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Columbia Lions swept the Saint Peter's softball team in a non-conference twinbill on Thursday. The Lions took the opening contest 8-6 and the nightcap, 5-2.

Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) paced Saint Peter's with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored in the opening contest. Taylor Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) and Candice Koch (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each added one RBI in the game.

Macy Shrum recorded three hits, two RBI and one run for Columbia while Emily Snodgrass chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.

Saint Peter's got on the board first in the second inning, following a RBI base hit from Olmedo to score Corretjer for the 1-0 advantage. The Peacocks scored two more times in the second inning, sparked by a throwing error by the Lions and a RBI double from Corretjer.

Columbia responded in the third inning, fueled by a RBI double to left field from Shelby Unger to only trail Saint Peter's, 3-1.

Saint Peter's countered with a run in the bottom of the inning, powered by a RBI single from Koch to give the Peacocks a 4-1 lead.

The Lions answered in the fourth inning with a two-run home from Shrum to cut the deficit to one. Columbia continued its offensive outburst in the fifth inning, scoring four more times behind two homeruns to give the Lions a 7-4 lead.

Saint Peter's cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a Columbia error. The Peacocks scored again in the sixth inning, following a homerun to left field from Olmedo.

Columbia added insurance in the seventh inning with a RBI from Alix Cook to lock up the 8-6 victory.

In the second game, Columbia took a 2-0 edge in the first inning following a Saint Peter's error and RBI single from Liz Caggiano. The Peacocks responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun from Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay).   

The Lions struck again in the fourth inning, scoring one run off a homer from Alyssa Rodia to extend its lead. The Peacocks countered with a score in the bottom of the inning off a RBI base hit from Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) to only trail, 3-2.

Columbia scored again in the fifth inning, following a single from Nicole Borchard to give the Lions a 4-2 lead. The Lions scored another run in the sixth inning on its way to a 5-2 victory.

With the losses, Saint Peter's falls to 9-29 overall while Columbia improves to 18-18 this season. 

The Peacocks return to action on Apr. 19, when they renew the Hourglass Rivalry with a doubleheader against Monmouth. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
