Box Score 2 WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth swept the Saint Peter's softball team in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Hawks took the opening contest 4-0 and the second game 7-6.
Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) paced the Peacocks in the opening game with two hits on three at-bats. As a team, Saint Peter's collected six total hits.
Alicia DeSanto and Raelynn Galindo provided the offense for the Hawks, each recording two RBI. Sydney Underhill pitched seven scoreless innings for Monmouth, recording four strikeouts.
Neither team was able to get things going offensively through the first five and a half innings, as a total of five hits were yielded between the two squads.
Monmouth was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, powered by a RBI single to right field from DeSanto to score Nikki Sandelier and Jill Freese.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Peacocks had bases loaded with no outs, but were unable to generate another hit to fuel a comeback bid.
The Hawks scored two more times in the bottom of the inning, sparked by a pinch hit from Galindo to fend off the Peacocks in the first game, 4-0.
In the second contest, Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) led the Peacocks with one hit, one run and three RBI. Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
Monmouth took a 1-0 edge in the first inning, fueled by a RBI base hit from DeSanto to score Shannon Fitzgerald. The Hawks expanded its lead in the second inning, powered by another RBI from DeSanto to score two runners and give Monmouth a 3-0 advantage. Monmouth drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning to build on its lead.
Saint Peter's offense exploded in the fourth inning, starting with a double to left center from Carlucci to score two runners and cut into the deficit. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third base, Harrison hit her fourth homerun of the season to give the Peacocks a 5-4 lead.
Monmouth countered in the fifth, as Freese hit a two-run homerun to left field to retake the lead, 6-5. Saint Peter's answered in the top the sixth inning, following an error by the Hawks on a throw to home plate to knot the game at six.
The Hawks used an infield single from Kayleena Flores in the bottom of the sixth to score Justene Reyes and take the second game, 7-6.
With the losses, Saint Peter's falls to 9-31 overall and 3-7 in conference action. Monmouth improves to 13-16 and 5-5 in MAAC play.
The Peacocks return to action Mon, Apr. 21 for a twinbill against Rider. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
