Florida International Takes Two From Saint Peter's Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIAMI, Fla. – Florida International swept Saint Peter's in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday. The Panthers won the opener 2-0 and then took the nightcap, 6-2.

Kyle Grimes (Iselin, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Memorial) paced the Peacocks (10-29) with two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) added two hits and an RBI.  Mark Wilson (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Clark) took the loss in the opener despite only allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout in six innings of work.

Cody Crouse picked up the win in the opener for Florida International (30-12) after pitching 6.2 shutout innings and scattering seven hits with one strikeout while Robby Kalaf allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work in the nightcap for the victory.

In the opener, the Panthers scored a run in the fourth and the seventh to come away with a 2-0 win.

J.C. Escarra plated the first run of the game in the fourth with an RBI single through the right side and Tyler Hibbert stole third and touched home on an error in the seventh for the game's second run.

Saint Peter's had 12 hits in the game and had several chances to score, but Florida International seemed to only allow runners on base with two outs after the Peacocks put runners on first and second with two outs in the second, third, fourth, fifth and eighth.

In the seventh, Grimes reached on an error and moved to third on Rob Moore's (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) double down the left field line, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Saint Peter's put two runners on in the ninth with one out, but could not cross a runner to the plate. Grimes reached on an infield single and moved to third on Moore's single to put runners at the corners only to see the game end on a pair of fielder's choices.

The Panthers scored the first four runs of the nightcap en route to a 6-2 win to complete the doubleheader sweep and take the first three games of the four game series.

Josh Anderson plated the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 lead in the first. After Roche Woodard doubled home a run in the second, Brian Portelli hit an RBI single and Brandon Gomez knocked in a run on sacrifice fly in the third for a 4-0 advantage.

Grimes and Moore walked with one out in the fourth before Hugg scored Grimes on an RBI single through the left side to trim the margin to 4-1.

Florida International added a run in the fifth on an Alec Beyersdorf double down the left field line and the Panthers added a run in the seventh on an error to increase the lead to 6-1.

The Peacocks posted a run in the eighth to set the final score at 6-2. Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) tripled to open the eighth and touched home on Grimes sacrifice fly to center.

AJ Celentano (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) took the loss in the nightcap.

Moore, Vinny Maietta (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Mary's) and Zach Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) each had three hits on the afternoon.

Saint Peter's and Florida International complete the four-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest. John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) takes the hill for the Peacocks.
