Marist Takes Two From Saint Peter's Softball In Season Finale

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Saint Peter's softball team suffered a sweep in its season finale against Marist on Sunday. The Red Foxes took the opening contest 9-0 and the final game, 7-1.

Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Taylor Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) each collected a hit for the Peacocks in the opening tilt.

Janna Korak paced Marist with two hits and three RBIs, while Taylor Kuzma added one hit, two RBIs and one run scored.

Marist took a 2-0 edge in the first inning, kicked off by a RBI double from Alyssa Zahka to score Krysten Van Natta. Next at bat, Kuzma scored from third following a throwing error by the Peacocks.

The Red Foxes added four more runs in the second inning. Kumza doubled to center to score two runners. Later in the inning, Colleen McWilliams scored on a fielding error to add a run. With the bases loaded, Marist drew a walk to advance the runner and give the Red Foxes a 6-0 lead. 

Marist scored three more times in the third, following a bases clearing double from Korak to power the Red Foxes to a 9-0 victory in five innings.

Paige Lewis earned the victory on the mound, throwing a complete game and limiting Saint Peter's to two hits. 

In the second game, Marist got on the board in the first inning, scoring two runs off a two-run homerun from Korak.

Saint Peter's countered in the second inning, scoring a run off a solo blast to left field from Samantha Storms (Lake Geneva, Wis./William Bay) to only trail, 2-1.

Marist responded in the bottom inning, adding two runs off a two-run homerun from Haley Birnbaum. The Red Foxes scored again in the third, fueled by a RBI single from Nicole Cheek. Marist added two more runs in the sixth, powered by a two-run homerun from Van Natta to secure the 7-1 victory.

Saint Peter's concludes its 2014 campaign 10-42 overall and 4-16 in MAAC play.
