Top Moment No. 11: Hopf And Kristoffersen Etch Names Into Baseball Record Book

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in 1927 and finished his career with 714 homers. Lou Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games. All three major league records that some thought would never be broken, but then came Roger Maris, Hank Aaron and Cal Ripken, Jr. Records are made and records are broken and two records fell on the diamond in 2014 for the Saint Peter's baseball team. Senior Zach Hopf (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) became the program's all-time career leader in strikeouts while sophomore Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) established a new single-season hit record to capture the No. 11 Moment in our 2013-14 Top-15 Moments Countdown.

Coming into his April 12th start against Rider, Hopf needed three strikeouts to become the program's all-time career leader in strikeouts. Hopf took over the top spot from Chris Innis (217, 2005-08) in the third inning after striking out the side with his second strikeout in the stanza setting the new standard.

Hopf would end his career as the program's all-time leader in strikeouts (253), games started (53) and innings pitched (343.0) while also ranking sixth in wins (13), sixth in appearances (56), 15th in ERA (4.62).

Hopf's performance against the Broncs could have also made our Moments list after posting eight shutout innings while scattering six hits with 13 strikeouts for his second win of the year and to garner Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts in the 3-0 win against the defending league regular season championships. The weekend also could have made the list after the Peacocks completed a three-game sweep against Rider.

Kristoffersen enjoyed an outstanding sophomore campaign that culminated when broke the program's single-season hit record against Rutgers on May 6.

The sophomore doubled in the fifth inning to break the Peacocks single-season hit record of 64 and finished the season with 67 base hits. Chris Pini (1994) and Preston Aldridge (2011) held the mark of 64 hits prior to this season.
