Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – NJIT scored twice in the second half to defeat Saint Peter's women's soccer 2-0 in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night.
Lauren Solene (Fall City, Wash./Mount Si) made three saves for the Peacocks (0-5-0) while Ashley Drozd (Baiting Hallows, N.Y./Riverhead) recorded four shots in the loss.
Kaelyn Gamel and Megan Dellavalle each found the back of the net for the Highlanders (2-5-0) while Karen David made eight saves to earn the shutout in the winning effort.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw through the first half before NJIT posted two tallies in the second half to earn its fifth-straight win in the series.
Gamel put the Highlanders on the scoreboard when she took a cross Dana Schules from the endline and found the back of the twine at the 53:14 mark for a 1-0 lead.
Dellavalle sealed the win with an penalty kick tally at 78:04 for the 2-0 victory.
NJIT outshot Saint Peter's 18-12, but the Peacocks had eight shots on goal compared to the Highlanders five attempts.
Saint Peter's had several chances to score on the night, but could not convert. In the first half the Peacocks' kept David busy, but the NJIT netminder turned away shots from Kirsten Mueller (East Northport, N.Y./Commack [Harcum]) (16th minute), Carlee Gonzalez (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) (27th minute), Devon Williams (Neptune City, N.J./Neptune [New Jersey City]) (30th minute) and Kristina Neri (San Jose, Callif./Santa Teresa) (31st minute) to keep the scoreless standstill going into the break.
Before the Highlanders' scored, Drozd had a shot saved in the 48th minute. After Gamel gave NJIT a one-goal lead, David thwarted shots by Drozd (64th minute), Gonzalez (67th minute) and Greta Vogel (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills [Scottsdale Community College]) (77th minute) to keep Saint Peter's off the scoreboard.
The Peacocks return to action at Albany on Sunday. Match time is 1 p.m.
