QUEENS, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's women's tennis team completed its first day at the Hofstra Tournament on Friday.
In the "A" singles bracket, Elena Melian Puigventos (Gran Canaria, Spain/Canlebury School of las Palmas) lost her opening match to Katie Bowen of Colgate, 8-2. Following a first-round bye, Adina Halagaian-Ungurean (Bucharest, Romania/Schiller International School) dropped an 8-4 decision to Sarah Bowen. Carmen Pestano of Hofstra defeated Lucia Radovic (Zadar, Crotia/Skola Primientiene Umietnosti Dizajna), 8-2.
In the "B" singles bracket, Claudia Hellman won her opening match against Bianca Posa, 8-5. In the quarterfinals, Hellman suffered an 8-2 loss to Hannah Fleckenstein. Following a first-round bye, Malieva Hedberg lost her contest against Biana Derrick, 8-3. Christian Resurreccion dropped her singles match against Lindsay Madnick, 8-2.
Puigventos, Hedburg, Hellman and Halagian all bounced back in the consolation bracket, defeating their opponents in the opening round.
The squad resumes play at the Hofstra Tournament on Saturday. Day two of the event is set to start at 8 a.m.
