JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's men's tennis team opened up its 2015 spring campaign on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 decision over Fordham.
Fordham opened play winning all three doubles matches. J.J. Tauil and Max Peara defeated the duo of Carlos Carrera (Quito, Ecuador / APCH) and Daniil Ivanov (Rostov-On-Don, Russia / (UMKC), 9-8. Pol Giraldez and Mischa Koran took the second doubles match from Simon Jackermeier (Munich, Germany) and Oliver Bellomi (Nanaimo, Canada / Laurel Spring), 8-3. The tandem of Joey Brander and Joseph Kavaloski defeated the team of Jorge Rodriguez (Havana, Cuba / Elizabeth) and Andres-Sebastian Rojas (Quito, Ecuador / Centebad) in the final doubles match.
Saint Peter's recovered from the points deficit in singles play, winning four of six singles matchups.
Carrera defeated Tauil in straight sets in the first singles match, 6-3 and 6-3. Ivanov downed Giraldez in consecutive sets, 6-0 and 6-2.
In third and fourth singles, both Jackermeier and Rojas were defeated to give the Rams a 3-2 edge. In fifth singles, Bellomi defeated Brander by the score of 6-4 and 6-1.
The decisive match point came in a contest between Luke Whaley (California / La Costa Canyon) and Kavaloski. After dropping the first set 2-6, Whaley battled back to win the second and third sets to clinch Saint Peter's the match.
The Peacocks return to action on Jan. 31, as the team will host Saint Joseph's. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
