Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Jaspers downed Saint Peter's 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's volleyball action on Wednesday.
Lauren Behrens achieved her tenth double-double for the Peacocks with 10 kills, one assist, and 19 digs. Marlena Budna tallied nine kills, two assists, and 12 digs while Amanda Colombo tallied nine kills, four assists, and six digs. Great Varvell added eight kills, one assist, and 11 digs.
The Jaspers (13-10, 7-3 MAAC) led early in the first set until the Peacocks (3-17, 1-9 MAAC) tied 5-5 with a kill by Kenyale Mcginnis from MacKenzie Alvarez. The Jaspers regained the lead with a 5-0 run, which was stopped with a service error by Alyssa Rehrer. A kill by Marlena Budna from MacKenzie Alvarez brought the score to 9-15 but Manhattan maintained their lead with two 5-0 runs at the end of the set, ending with a score of 25-10.
The second set began with a Manhattan lead, but the Peacocks quickly tied the game at 6-6 with a kill by Marlena Budna from Amanda Colombo. Saint Peter's went on a 3-0 run later in the set with a kill by Lauren Behrens from Kaitlyn Sitton tying the game at 11-11. The teams went back and forth to tie again at 14-14, with the Jaspers later pulling away with kills by Casey Monroe and Milena Janjusevic both by Jade Gray. The Peacocks decreased the gap to 21-22 due to a attack error by Claire Van Dyke before a timeout was called by the Jaspers. Manhattan maintained the lead with a final score of 25-23 in the second set.
The two teams went back and forth until the Peacocks went on a 5-0 run in the third set with kills by Kenyale Mcginnis, Marlena Budna, and Lauren Behrens and attack errors by Sydney Volovski and Milena Janjusevic of Manhattan, bringing the score to 14-9. The Jaspers attempted to close the gap late in the third set, but the Peacocks maintained the lead with a final score of 25-18.
A 3-0 run put the Peacocks in the lead early in the fourth set. The Jaspers then returned with a 7-1 run, gaining the lead and bringing the score to 11-7. A service error by Alyssa Rehrer of Manhattan stopped a 4-0 by the Jaspers, however, Manhattan maintained the lead with a final score of 25-19 at the end of the fourth set.
Senior Lauren Behrens become the 10th player in Saint Peter's women's volleyball program history to reach 1,000 kills in the third set against Marist on September 27. Currently sitting at 1,104 kills, she ranks seventh in the team's history and is now the seventh player to have 1,1000 kills.
Behrens is also the ninth player in Saint Peter's history with 1,000 career digs. She is now the fourth player in team history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, joining the likes of Valentina Zaharieva, Yvette Lozinski, and Kim Mendoza.
The Peacocks will head to Marist on Saturday for a match at 1pm.
