Box Score Saint Peter's fell to Iona 3-2 in their last home game of the season in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's volleyball action on Wednesday.
Four athletes achieved a double-double during this match. Lauren Behrens (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) lead the Peacocks with 20 kills, one assists, 26 digs. Amanda Colombo (Wallington, N.J. / Wallington) followed with 12 kills, three assists, and 18 digs. Greta Varvell (San Jose, CA / Branham) tallied 11 kills and 15 digs while Kaitlyn Sitton (Brush Praire, Wash. / Prairie) added six kills, 44 assists, and 12 digs. Marlena Budna (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) tallied eight kills, one assist, and 6 digs while Kenyale Mcginnis (Irving, TX / Irving) added three kills, three assists, and 17 digs.
The two teams battled it out early in the first set, tying at 4-4 with a kill by Marlena Budna of the Peacocks and 9-9 with an attack error by Claire Archibald of the Gaels. The Gaels went on a 3-0 run which was broken by another attack error by Archibald. Down 3 during the middle of the set, the Peacocks called a timeout.
The Peacocks returned to the game with a kill by Lauren Behrens and a service ace by Archibald, bringing the score to 15-16 Iona. The teams were tied at 19-19 until the Gaels went up three late in the first set. After another Saint Peter's timeout, kills by Archibald, Karly White, and K. McAuley-Pomeroy of Iona put the Gaels in the lead, with a final score of 25-21 in the first set.
Saint Peter's went on a 5-1 run early in the second set. The Gaels later wen on a 4-1 run, bringing the score to 7-9. Saint Peter's maintained the lead with kills by Lauren Behrens and Marlena Budna until a ball handling error by Greta Varvell tied the game at 18-18. Two kills by Varvell put the Peacocks in the lead again. After a timeout, the Gaels returned to the set with a kill by Claire Archibald and a attack error by Kaitlyn Sitton of the Peacocks.
Down by three, the Gaels called another timeout and returned to the game with a 3-0 run, tying the game at 23-23. An attack error by Kenyale Mcginnis brought the score to 25-25. A kill by Lauren Behrens and a Iona service ace solidified the win for the Peacocks in the second set, with a final score of 27-25.
The Gaels went on a 4-0 run early in the third set with kills by Mcauley-Pomerol and Archibald and attack errors by Behrens and Amanda Colombo of the Peacocks. The Gaels maintained the lead until an attack error by Amanda Gannon tied the game at 8-8. Iona took the lead and quickly lost it with an attack error by Taylor Bannister, tying the game again at 10-10. Iona called a timeout after the Peacocks went up two. The two teams went back and forth until a 6-0 run by the Peacocks, bringing the score to 22-15. A kill by Marlena Budna put the Peacocks up 25-20 putting ahead Saint Peter's 2-1 in the action.
The Peacocks and the Gaels would not give up the lead early in the fourth set well into the middle with a tied game at 9-9. The Gaels later went on a 5-0 run, which was followed by a Saint Peter's timeout. The Peacocks returned to the set, tying the score at 16-16 with a kill by Behrens. Saint Peter's took the lead after an attack error by Taylor Bannister of the Gaels and a kill by Kaitlyn Sitton.
After a timeout called by Iona, a bad set by Jessica Paolucci and an attack error by Natalie Siskin put the Peacocks in the lead 23-21. Shortly after, a kill by Mcauley-Pomeroy tied the game at 23-23. Iona took the lead with a kill by Mia Bonsignore, winning at set 26-24.
In the last and deciding set, the Gaels got off to an early lead. The Peacocks quickly retaliated with a 4-1 run, tying the game at 5-5. The teams stayed within a two-point deficit until a kill by Claire Archibald of the Gaels brought the score to 12-9. The Gaels went up and maintained the lead with a final score of 15-11.
The Peacocks will head north to face the Niagara Purple Eagles on Saturday at 1pm.
