Antwon Portley Powered Saint Peter's Men's Basketball To Victory Over The Bears

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Antwan Portley - with 30 points, five rebounds, and two assists - lead the Peacocks (1-0, 0-0 MAAC) to victory over the Brown Bears (0-1) in men's basketball action on Friday.

Travis Wyche (Neptune, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) followed with fourteen points, two rebounds, and three assists while Chazz Patterson (Browns Mills, N.J. / Trenton Catholic) tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Saint Peter's Antwon Portley (Lancaster, Texas / Lancaster) opened the game up with a jump shot. Justin Massey of the Browns quickly retaliated with a 3-pointer. Blackmon followed with another 3-pointer putting the Browns up three, but a three-point jumpsuit by Trevis Wyche put the Peacocks in the lead 7-5.

An 11-0 run by the Browns put them in the lead with 3-pointers by Corey Daughtry, Justin Massey, and JR Hobbie and two free throws by Steven Spieth. The Peacocks pushed to close the gap in the middle of the half. 

Patterson of the Peacocks made a jump shot bringing the score to 19-24. Aston Portley hit a three-pointer, bringing the deficit to two with three minutes left in the first half. A layup by Jason Massey brought the deficit back to four (28-24). 

Desport was fouled by Massey while making a layup and hit his free throw, bringing the deficit down to two with 20 seconds left in the half. With the final possession in the half, Chazz Patterson of the Peacocks attempted a jump shot but could not convert, leaving the score at 30-32.

Quadir Welton scored the first field goal for the Peacocks in the second half, tying the game at 33-33. The Browns took the lead again with two free throws by Steven Spieth, going up two. 

Down 9 with ten minutes to go, Antwon Portley hit a jumpsuit, bringing the deficit to seven. Lay ups by Trevis Wyche and Chazz Patterson brought the score to 53-56 with seven minutes left. 

Antwon Portley hit another three, tying the game at 58-58, the first tie of the second half with five and a half minutes remaining. A layup by Chazz Patterson gave the Peacocks their first lead of the second half with under five minutes to play, followed by a field goal by Portley, which put the Peacocks up four - his tenth field goal of the game. 

With just over three minutes remaining, Wyche hit a three-pointer, regained possession, and made a layup, bringing the score to 69-61. With just under a minute left, leading eight, the Peacocks regained possession, with Wyche scoring another field goal. Chazz Patterson finalized the Peacock win with two free throws, ending the game 77-65. 

The Peacocks will head to Lafayette College to face the Leopards on Sunday.
