Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeated Saint Peter's 6-4 in non-conference baseball action in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) recorded two hits and an RBI for the Peacocks (0-1) while Zach Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) had two hits and a run scored and Sean Henry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) knocked in two runs in the loss.
Cody Clarke powered the Islanders (1-0) with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored while Travis Geiser posted a hit and three RBIs in the winning effort.
After neither team got on the scoreboard for the first five innings, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi broke a 2-all standstill with four runs in the seventh and held on for a 6-4 victory.
With the game tied at 2 in the seventh, Charke reached on an infield single to plate the go-ahead run before Geiser hit a bases loaded clearing triple for a 6-2 advantage.
Saint Peter's came back with two runs in the eighth to trim the margin to 6-4. Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) reached on an error, Jose Martinez (Browns Mills, N.J./Remberton Township) and Rawson each walked to load the bases before Vinny Maietta (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Mary's) coaxed a bases loaded walk to plate Hugg. Henry then plated the Peacocks fourth run of the game on a fielder's choice, but a ground out ended the threat.
The Islanders grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth thanks to RBI singles by Clarke and Justin Pereales.
Saint Peter's answered with two runs in the seventh to even the score at 2. Nick Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) started the rally when he reached on an error and then Rawson singled before both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After Henry brought home Henriquez on a groundout, Kristoffersen plated Rawson on an infield single. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi then scored four of the final six runs to earn the victory.
Mike Doran (Ashbury, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) pitched five innings with no runs allowed, three hits and two strikeouts in his Peacocks debut. Kevin Soriano (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) took the loss for Saint Peter's.
Martinez also made his Peacocks debut on the night and
Anthony Assante (Brick, N.Y./Brick Memorial) made his collegiate debut.
Saint Peter's returns to action in the second game of a three-game series against the Islanders on Saturday. Game time is 8 p.m. EST.
