Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's scored the final three runs to earn a 3-2 victory against Saint Peter's in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.
Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) paced the Peacocks (1-12) with two hits and a run scored while Sean Henry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) also had two hits in the loss.
Matt Harris powered the Red Storm (10-8) with two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Robert Wayman and Jesse Berardi also knocked in a run in the winning effort.
Saint Peter's jumped out to a 2-0 lead after their top of the first before St. John's scored a run in three different innings to come away with the victory.
Ciocco opened the game with a double to left field and moved to third on a ground out. After Nick Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) was hit with a pitch to put runners at the corners, Ciocco touched home on a wild pitch. Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) singled through the left side to put runners at the corners with one out before Henriquez and Moore successfully pulled off a double steal to score Henriquez with the second run. After Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) walked, a foul out and a ground out ended the threat with the Peacocks holding a 2-0 lead.
Wayman trimmed the margin in half with a sacrifice fly in the second. Harris tied the game at 2 with a home run to right field to open the sixth and Berardi gave the Red Storm the lead it would not relinquish on an RBI single to left center in the seventh.
After scoring two runs in the first, Saint Peter's posted two hits over the next six innings. In the eighth, the Peacocks put together back-to-back singles but could not score. Ciocco reached on a bunt base hit and Mike Ionta (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) single to right center, but a double play and a strikeout out ended the threat.
Paul Schifilliti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) pitched well, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout in six innings of work. Nathaniel Leon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) took the loss for Saint Peter's.
The game against Saint Joseph's, originally scheduled for Wednesday in Jersey City, has been postponed due to field conditions.
The Peacocks return to action this weekend against Niagara in league play.
