Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Saint Peter's and NJIT ended in 8-all standstill after the game was called due to darkness after the 10th inning in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.
Christopher Micak (Edison, N.J./Metuchen) paced the Peacocks (2-14-1) with a two-run double while Michael Wulff (Madison, N.J./Madison) added two runs scored, a hit and an RBI and Vinny Maietta (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Marys) posted two hits, a run scored and an RBI on the afternoon.
Matt McKinnon powered the Highlanders (10-7-1) with three hits and three RBIs and Bryan Haberstroh registered two hits, a run scored and an RBI on the day.
The game started in a steady rain and the hopes of getting through five innings for an official game, but after the rain slowed and stopped in the sixth inning the two battled back and forth before the game was called due to darkness.
NJIT scored the first five runs of the game before Saint Peter's scored the next seven runs. The Highlanders then answered with three runs in the seventh to retake the lead only to see the Peacocks score a run in the bottom of the seventh to even the game at 8.
After Saint Peter's tied the game at 8, neither team had a runner reach third in the final three innings. Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) nearly ended the game in dramatic fashion when he sent a drive to deep right field, but his shot was caught at the warning track in the bottom of the ninth.
NJIT scored a run in the first and a run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Stephan Hallbej hit an RBI single in the first and McKinnon doubled home a run in the second.
The Highlanders then added three runs in the fourth thanks to bases loaded walks by Jesse Uttendorfer and Ed Charlton before Haberstroh capped the three-run inning with an RBI single to right field for a five-run advantage.
The Peacocks scored four times in the fourth to trim the margin to 5-4. Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) and Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) opened the rally with consecutive singles. With one out, Maietta singled home Kristoffersen and Wulff plated Hugg on a single up the middle. Micak then notched his first collegiate hit with a two-run double to left field to score Maietta and Wulff and make it a one-run game.
Saint Peter's then posted three runs in the sixth to take the lead at 7-5. Pinch runners Angel Perez (Bayonne, N.J./Marist) and Sean Henry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) successfully pulled off a double steal with Perez crossing the plate. After Wulff walked, Wulff and Henry repeated the trick to score Henry before Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) smacked a single up the middle to bring home Wulff to hand the Peacocks a two-run lead.
NJIT came right back with three runs in the seventh to retake the lead at 8-7 after McKinnon hit a two-run single and Matt Stalter gave the Highlanders the edge with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the inning, Hugg reached on an error, moved to second on Moore's single through the right side and to third on a wild pitch before touching home on a error to tie the game at 8. The two teams would play three more innings, but the contest would be halted due to darkness after the 10th inning.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Wednesday at Penn. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
