Canisius Takes Rubber Game Of Three-Game Series Against Saint Peter's Baseball

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Canisius defeated Saint Peter's 23-0 in the rubber game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball three-game series on Sunday.

The Peacocks (4-20-1, 3-6 MAAC) scattered four hits and only put runners in scoring position one time on the afternoon. Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) was hit with a pitch to open the fourth and then Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) singled down the left field line and moved to second on the throw to put runners on second and third with two outs, but a ground out ended the threat.

Jake Lumney paced the Golden Griffins (16-20, 8-4 MAAC) with a 4-for-6 performance, seven RBIs and three runs scored. Jesse Puscheck went 4-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Both players missed the cycle on the day with Lumney needing a triple to complete the trick while Puscheck needed a homer, but was within inches of the round tripper in the second when he had a ball that hit off the top of the right field fence and back into play for a double.

Canisius scored in six of the nine innings on the afternoon and put up crooked numbers in five frames en route to its 23 runs.

Brett Sidall, who had four RBIs on the day, powered a four-run first with a three-run homer to right to give the Golden Griffins a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Puscheck added a two-run double off the top of the right field fence and Sidall capped his four RBI day with a sacrifice fly to increase the margin to 7-0 after two innings.

Canisius registered two runs in the fifth on an RBI single to left by Lumney and an RBI ground out by Anthony Massicci for a nine-run lead.

Sparked by a Puscheck two-run double, an Alex O'Donnell two-run single and a pair of Lumney RBI base hits, the Golden Griffins scored seven times in the seventh to take a 16-0 lead.

A Nick Capitano two-run double and a Lumney grand slam in the eighth pushed the Golden Griffins advantage to 22-0 while John Conti capped the day with an RBI single in the ninth.

Kevin Soriano (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) took the loss for Saint Peter's.

The Peacocks conclude its four-game homestand with a non-conference game against Wagner at Jaroschak Field on Tuesday. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
