Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Iona swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Sunday. The Gaels won the opener 18-0 and then defeated the Peacocks in the second game, 12-6.
Chelsea Crews (Seattle, Wash. / Mountlake Terrace) tallied four hits and one run scored on the day. Candice Koch (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg) posted three hits, one run and one RBI while Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla. / Ocoee [ndian River State]) added one hit, one run and three RBIs in the doubleheader.
Kristen Turner powered the Gaels (8-21, 5-5 MAAC) with five hits, five runs and five RBIs. Courtney Miller added four hits, three runs and five RBIs in the sweep.
In the opener, Iona held the Peacocks (1-25, 0-10 MAAC) to five hits in an 18-0 victory in five innings.
Iona scored six runs in the opening inning to take the lead. The inning was fueled by a three-run homerun from Turner.
The Gaels tacked on two more runs in the second inning with a pair of RBI base hits from Sarah Schutz and Brianna King to hold an 8-0 advantage. Iona added a run in the fourth inning with a RBI-single from Allison Hand.
Iona recorded nine runs in the fifth inning. The runs were powered by five different homeruns from the Gaels to secure the 18-0 victory.
Alyssa Ruiz (Howell, N.J. / Howell) took the loss on the mound.
In the second game, Iona got on the board first with a two-run homerun from Turner to take the lead.
Saint Peter's cut into the margin in the bottom of the inning, following a wild pitch that allowed Nicole Feoli (Burlington Twp, N.J. / Burlington) to touch home plate.
Iona added two more run in the second inning following a RBI-single from Lauren Filardi and a base hit from Hand to score Filardi.
The Peacocks cut into the deficit in the third inning off a solo homerun from Koch to trail 4-2.
The Gaels scored four more times in the fourth inning, powered by a two-run single from Ashlyn Morris to score Hand and Filardi. Iona tacked on another run in the fifth inning with another RBI base hit from Morris.
Iona added three runs in the sixth following RBIs from Allyne Clark, Miller and Filardi to take an 11-2 lead.
Saint Peter's made up some ground in the sixth inning, following a three-run homerun from Klempel and a RBI single from Samantha Storms (Lake Geneva, Wis. / William Bay) to cut the lead.
Iona extended its lead in the seventh inning off an RBI hit from Katie Newton to secure a 12-6 win.
Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J. / John F. Kennedy Memorial) took the loss on the mound in the second game.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Apr. 16 with a weekday doubleheader at Columbia.
