Monmouth Takes Two From Saint Peter's Softball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Monmouth swept Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Hawks won the opener 15-11 and the second game 11-4.

Nicole Feoli (Burlington Twp, N.J. / Burlington) paced the Peacocks (1-29, 0-12 MAAC) with five hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev. / Coronado) and Taylor Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y. / North Rockland) finished with four hits and two RBIs apiece in the doubleheader. 

Vanessa Cardoza powered Monmouth (10-18, 6-4 MAAC) with six hits, seven RBIs and three runs scored. Ashalynn Umiamaka collected five hits, eight RBIs and two runs scored in the series sweep.

In the opener, Monmouth used four runs in the ninth inning to pick up the 15-11 victory. 

Monmouth took a 2-0 lead in the first inning following a two-run double from Rachel Shotzbarger to left field.

The Hawks extended their lead in the second inning with three runs. Raelynn Galindo doubled through the right side to score Jill Freese for the first score. Later in the inning, Umiamaka collected an RBI on a flyout to score Galindo. To batters later with the bases loaded, Shotzbarger drew a walk to score another run for the 5-0 advantage. 

Saint Peter's got on the board in the sixth inning, exploding for six runs to take the lead. Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla. / Ocoee [Indian River State]) drew a bases loaded walk to score a runner, followed by a RBI-single from Candice Koch (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg). Corretjer drew another bases loaded walk to score a runner, followed by an RBI fly out from Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif. / Chino) to tally another run. Harrison capped off the inning with an RBI-single through the left side to give the Peacocks a 6-5 edge.

The Peacocks extended their lead in the third inning following an RBI hit from Corretjer. Saint Peter's scored another run on a fielder's choice from Olmedo to take an 8-5 lead. 

Monmouth countered in the bottom of the inning with three runs, powered by an RBI single from Shotzbarger and a pair of sacrifice flies to knot the contest at 8.

The Hawks took the lead in the sixth inning off an RBI-single from Cardoza to score Kayleena Flores from second to take a 9-8 lead. 

Saint Peter's regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, powered by a two-run single from Feoli and a drawn bases loaded walk from Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J. / John F. Kennedy Memorial) for the 11-9 edge.

The game went into extra innings, without either team scoring a run until the ninth inning. 

Carlucci took the loss on the mound in the opener.

In the second game, the Peacocks got on the board first in the opening inning. With Harrison on third, Olmedo reached base on a Monmouth error allowing Harrison to touch home for the 1-0 lead. 

Monmouth countered with a run in the second inning, powered by an inside the park from Flores to tie the game.

The Peacocks answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, fueled by RBI base hits from Harrison and Feoli to take a 3-1 lead. 

The Hawks responded with two runs in third, following a two-run double to left field from Brooke Redmond to tie the game. Monmouth added another tally in the fifth inning off a solo homerun from Redmond to extend the lead.

Monmouth scored four more times in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run homerun to left field from Shotzbarger. 

Saint Peter's got back a run in the bottom of the inning off another RBI hit from Feoli to score Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Immaculate Conception).

The Hawks secured the win in the seventh inning following a three-run homerun from Cardoza. 

Tori Feorenzo (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) took the loss on the mound in the second game.

Saint Peter's returns to action tomorrow with an hOURglass rivalry doubleheader against Rider. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
