Volleyball Loses Contest Against Iona 3-1

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Iona defeated Saint Peter's Volleyball in four sets, 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-20) Saturday afternoon in the Yanitelli Center.

The Peacocks got off to a good start as they won the first set, unfortunately they finished empty handed as they lost three straight sets.

Leaders were Saint Peter's, Meredith Przybocki with 8 kills scoring accumulative of 9 points, and Marlena Budna posted 6 kills, 5 block assists scoring team high of 10.5 points. Former Libero, Carolina Ruiz, added 12 assist as a setter while Kaitlyn Sitton followed with 11 assists.

Saint Peter's came out strong as they battled Iona tying early 6-6 in the first match. Saint Peter's started to pull away leading 10-7 after a kill by Danielle Lopez  and two serving aces forcing the Gaels into their first timeout of the set. The Gaels fought back as they reached a 4-point run leading 14-13 just over the midway point. The intensity grew as the teams went point for point tying five times at 14, 15, 17,18 and 20. The Peacocks kept their poise as they fled from an even score of 22-22 finishing the set 25-22.

Saint Peter's kept Iona on their toes as they forced them into an early timeout at 3-1. Iona then jumped out leading by five points at 9-4. The Peacocks had a hard time catching up to the Gaels as they advanced to a 17-7 lead before they went on to win the second set  25-14.

In the first half of the third set, the Peacocks picked up their intensity as they reached a tied score at 8-8. The Gaels broke the tie by scoring 3 points, then carried out a 8-point run to lead the Peacocks 21-9. Saint Peter's failed to answer as the Gaels finished the set 24-12.

The Peacocks put up a fight in the fourth set evening the score three times before the mid way score of 10-12 with the Gaels in the lead. The Peacocks continued to tally points ,but were not able to break Iona's lead allowing the Gaels to win 25-20.

Saint Peter's will play Manhattan back to back hosting them on Oct.16th then travel to Riverdale to face them again on their home court.
