The Saint Peter's University men's basketball team will head on the road for the first time this season to play in the Johnny Bach Classic on the campus of Fordham University at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, New York. The tournament format is three games in three days from Friday to Sunday. The Peacocks will meet Lipscomb on Friday, tournament host Fordham on Saturday, and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
What the Peacocks are up against
The Peacocks will have to go up against three teams that have combined for over 50 wins over the last two seasons, with two of the three teams qualifying for postseason play in 2015-16 (Fordham - CIT, Fairleigh Dickinson - NCAA).
The scout on Lipscomb
The Bisons enter the tournament with a 2-1 record, coming off of a 99-70 blowout win over Piedmont. The Bisons had seven different players score in double figures in the win and were led by George Brammeier and Rob Marberry who each scored 15 points. On the season, Lipscomb has four players averaging over 10 points per outing, with sophomore Garrision Mathews ahead of the pack averaging 15.3 points per game and the team is averaging 90.0 points per contest.
Fordham's scoop
The tournament host Fordham Rams, enters the weekend with a 1-1 overall record. The Rams opened the season with a loss to East Tennessee State and then picked up a win against New York Institute of Technology. Fordham was led in the win by Joseph Chartouny's third career double-double and Javontae Hawkins team-high 18 points. Hawkins also leads the Rams this season in scoring, with an 18.0 points per game average.
Word on Fairleigh Dickinson
The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights enter the classic with a 1-1 record, fresh off of their 2015-16 NCAA tournament berth. The Knights most recently defeated Division III Fairleigh Dickinson of Florham, NJ 96-48. Sophomore forward Mike Holloway paced the Knights with a career-high 25 points on 12-for-14 (85.7%) shooting from the field. Darian Anderson has registered a team-best 23.0 points per game, with Holloway right behind him with a scoring average of 16.0 points.
Last time out
• The Peacocks dropped its home season opener to Lafayette 61-57. The Peacocks held a nine-point lead at the final media timeout of the contest before the Leopards rallied off the final 13 points of the game to secure the victory.
• Senior forward Quadir Welton paced the Peacocks with a team-high 20 points against Lafayette in the season opener.
• Nnamdi Enechionyia scored 12 points and Nick Griffin added eight in both of their debuts as Peacocks.
• Cavon Baker grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in his first contest with Saint Peter's.
What's trending
• Quadir Welton's 20-point effort marked the third 20+ point output of Welton's career and matched his second highest scoring output (20 points) which he scored on Feb. 27, 2016 against Fairfield.
• Welton was one of 10 players in the MAAC to score 20 or points in the opening week and he currently ranks T4th in scoring amongst the league leaders.
• Cavon Baker's eight rebounds in the season opener ranked 4th in the conference and was the most amongst guards in the MAAC.
• Baker is the only guard currently ranked in the top five of the league in rebounding.
• Trevis Wyche ranks first in the MAAC with his 3.0 steals average.
• Wyche also sits at the top of the conference in assist/turnover ratio.
• Wyche is one of just two players in the league to post no turnovers and have a perfect assist to turnover ratio
• Saint Peter's defense stands as one of the best in the MAAC thus far in the season as the Peacocks rank first in scoring defense, rebounding defense, and defensive rebounding percentage.
MEET THE 2016-17 SQUAD
• The Peacocks return four of its five starters and eight letter winners from last year's team.
THE ALL-MAAC TRIO
• Quadir Welton earned Preseason All-MAAC Second Team honors. The senior started all 30 games for the Peacocks and averaged 12.4 points last season. He dominated the glass, averaging 8.2 rebounds per game, which ranked second best in the conference and was a double-double machine, posting 11 which was third most in the league in 2015-16. The senior posted double figure-point games in 21 of the 30 games including a career-high 24 points against Niagara on Feb.12. Welton also rejected 33 shots in his junior campaign, well enough for the top 10 in the league.
• Trevis Wyche was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team. Wyche averaged 12.4 points per outing last season earning All-MAAC Second Team accolades despite being injured for most of the season. The senior guard was one of the top dime droppers in the MAAC, dishing out the fifth most assists in the conference with his 4.5 average. He also ranked second in the league in assist to turnover ratio, logging a 2.1 ratio. Wyche scored a career-high, 26 points against nationally ranked George Washington on Dec. 19. He was also one of the most efficient shooter in the conference, posting a 51.1 percent field goal average, which ranked fifth in the league.
• Antwon Portley joined Wyche on the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team. The sophomore started in all 30 games as a true freshman last season earning MAAC All-Rookie Team honors. Portley made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut, scoring a career-high 30 points against Brown and kept pace leading the Peacocks and ranking 17th in the MAAC with his 14.0 points per game. He recorded 22 games with 10+ points and nine games with 20+ points. Portley earned weekly honors on three occasions in his rookie campaign.
LOCKDOWN DEFENDER
• Along with the All-MAAC trio, senior lock down defender, Chazz Patterson (Browns Mills, NJ/Trenton Catholic) is the fourth returning starter. Patterson, started in all 30 games last season and averaged 8.0 points per game, while posting a team best, 43 total steals in 2015-16.
TIME TO SUIT UP
• Senior Cavon Baker (Queens, NY/New Hope Academy [Md.] (Houston), junior Nnamdi Enechionyia (Springfield, VA/St. James School (Samford)), and junior Nick Griffin (Rockville, MD/Col. Zadok Magruder (George Washington)) become eligible this season after the three sat out all of 2015-16 due to transfer regulations.
BACK ON THE LINEUP
• Junior J.R. William (Linden, NJ/Linden (Globe Institute of Technology) is back on the lineup in 2016-17.
• The sophomore big men duo of Mamadou Ndiaye (Laurel, MD/Oakland Mills) and Samuel Idowu (Brooklyn, NY/Lafayette Educational Complex) are projected to contribute to the Peacocks lineup in their second seasons.
SITTING THIS ONE OUT
• Sophomore guard Cameron Jones (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) will sit out this season as he takes a redshirt year.
WELCOME TO JERSEY CITY
• The Peacocks welcome two newcomers and one walk-on to its roster this season.
• JUCO transfer, Davauhnte Turner (Simsboro, LA/Grambling/Independence Community College) and true freshman Quinn Taylor (Amarillo, TX/Tascosa) join the team as scholarship newcomers in 2016-17. Turner will redshirt this season while Taylor will look to make his collegiate debut as a freshman.
• Sean Barksdale (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) is a freshman walk-on that will look to make his collegiate debut this year.
THREE ON THE PRESEASON TEAM
• The last time the Peacocks placed three players on preseason teams, was in 2010-11 (Wesley Jenkins, Ryan Bacon, and Nick Leon). The trio led the Peacocks to the 2011 MAAC championship that season and were all named to the 2011 All-Tournament team.
ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF
• John Dunne is in his 11th season as the Saint Peter's head coach.
He led the 2011 squad to his first and only 20 win season, the 2011 MAAC Tournament title, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. During that season, he was also named a finalist for the 2011 Skip Prosser Award.
Dunne has victories over Power Five Conference programs such as Alabama (50-49 in 2010-11), Rutgers (65-58 in 2007-08, 56-52 in 2012-13, 68-50 in 2013-14) and Seton Hall (83-80 OT in 2013-14).
Dunne was a four-year letter winner for the Ithaca men's basketball team from 1988-92. He helped the team to a 61-47 mark in his four seasons, including an 18-10 record in his junior campaign. Dunne left as the Bombers all-time leader with 168 career steals and he dished out 376 career assists to rank third upon the completion of his playing career. He also ranks on the single-season steal list, sitting in second place after recording 60 steals as a senior and tied for ninth with 52 steals in his junior year.
He earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Ithaca and Master's degree in Sports Management at East Stroudsburg in 1996.
A Queens, N.Y. native, he played his high school basketball for the late legendary head coach Jack Curran at Archbishop Molloy High School.
He is married to Marlene Burchfield Dunne, Ph.D., who serves as the U.S. Vice President of Assessment Services for SHL, an International Human Resources Consulting Firm. They reside in Florham Park, N.J. with their two children, Chloe and Brady.
• Assistant coaches Matt Henry and Serge Clement each return to the bench for their fourth seasons under John Dunne.
• JK Schneiderman returns for his second season as the director of basketball operations.
• David Danzig joins the staff in 2016-17 as an assistant coach.
