Strong Finish Propels UMES Past Saint Peter's Baseball

RICHMOND, Va. – Maryland-Eastern Shore scored 12 unanswered runs to upend Saint Peter's baseball 17-5 in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.

Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) had a hit and two RBIs while Angel Perez (Jersey City, N.J./Marist HS) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Peacocks in the loss.

Joseph Nicastro powered the Hawks (2-3) with two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs while Jessey Valdez added two hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Jamison Trower added three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Dallas Culotta posted two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the winning effort.

UMES held the lead for most of the game until Saint Peter's came back to tie the game in the seventh only to see the Hawks score 12 times in the final two innings to earn a split over a two-day period at Richmond.

After Moore doubled home the tying run in the seventh to even the score at 5, UMES scored four times in the eighth to take a 9-5 lead. Nicastro gave the Hawks the lead for good on a two-run single before Justin Somerville was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run and Jordan Martin plated a run on a groundout.

In the ninth, Conor Breslin and Nicastro each plated a run and Trower, Culotta and Trower for the second time in the inning each smacked two-run base hits to set the final score at 17-5.

UMES grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Valdez.

The Jersey City team answered with a run in the bottom of the inning after Perez tripled to right center and touched home on Moore's RBI groundout.

The Hawks increased the margin to 4-1 after scoring twice in the third on a Valdez RBI single up the middle and a Skylar Murray sacrifice fly. Somerville added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give UMES a four-run lead.

Saint Peter's scored three times in the fifth to make it a one-run game at 5-1. Jason Midkiff (Wanaque, N.J./Paramus Catholic) started the rally with a single to left field before Christopher Micak (Edison, N.J./Metuchen) reached on an infield single. With one out, Griffin Arnott (Brielle, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) plated Midkiff on a single and Perez brought home Micak on a groundout. Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) capped the three-run inning with an RBI single to the opposite field.

In the seventh, Arnott walked and Perez singled to left field. With two outs, Moore doubled home Arnott with the game-tying run, but the Hawks scored the final 12 runs to take the game.

Arnott finished with one hit, two runs scored and an RBI while Midkiff had two hits and a run scored.

Michael Ammerman (Howell, N.J./Howell) made his Saint Peter's debut on the mound while Willie Krajnik (Lyndhurst, N.J./Saint Mary) took the loss.

Saint Peter's concludes its four games in Richmond on Sunday against Richmond. First pitch is 10 a.m.
