JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Saint Peter's men's basketball freshman Antwon Portley (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster) lost in the Round of 32 in the fan vote for the College Court Report Mid-Major Freshman of the Year, announced on Sunday. It was closely-contested vote that saw the Peacocks freshman fall by just two votes to Matt Morgan from Cornell.
After defeating Otis Livingston II from George Mason 60.3 percent to 39.7 percent in the first round, Portley was edged by Morgan with the chance of going to the Sweet 16 after Morgan garnered 50.04 percent of the vote while Portley posted 49.96 percent.
Portley made a huge splash in his first collegiate game with a career-high 30 points against Brown on Nov. 13 and the freshman has continued his success to lead the team with 14.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game and earned an unanimous spot on the MAAC All-Rookie team. Portley, who was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week three times in the first six weeks, has 22 double-figure point games this season, including nine tilts with at least 20 points. Portley averaged 16.1 points per game in the 14 Peacocks wins this season.
