Siena Takes Two From Saint Peter's Softball

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Sunday. The Saints won the opener 7-0 and then took the nightcap, 8-1.

Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla./Ocoee) paced the Peacocks (0-25, 0-4 MAAC) with three hits and a run scored while Samantha Storms (Lake Geneva, Wisc./William Bay) posted two hits and an RBI in the second game.

Alyssa Lancaster fueled Siena (17-14, 4-4 MAAC) with five hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Chelsey Drew posted three hits, six RBIs and three runs scored while Sammy Smaldone added three hits, four runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon.

In the opener, the Saints scored in five of the six innings to earn a 7-0 win.

Lancaster got the scoring started with an RBI double before Drew hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Melanie Kalesse scored on a wild pitch and Lancaster plated her second run of the afternoon on a run-scoring single in the second to extend the lead to four runs.

Drew led off the third with a solo homer and Smaldone registered a sacrifice fly in the fourth before Paige Hess capped the 7-0 win with an RBI single to center.

Saint Peter's got a runner to second base in the second after Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) reached on an error and Tiffani Lambert (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) walked with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) took the loss for the Peacocks in the first game.

Siena used three multi-run innings in the nightcap to earn an 8-1 victory.

Just like in the opener, Lancaster got the scoring started in the second game with an RBI double before Hess hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead after three innings.

The Saints added three runs in the fifth to extend the lead to five runs. Hess and Drew each smacked RBI doubles before Madysen Cossack plated the third run of the stanza on an RBI single to right center.

Saint Peter's got on the scoreboard in the sixth with a run. Klempel reached on an infield single, stole second and came around to score on Storms' RBI double to center to cut the margin to 5-1.

Drew then added three insurance runs on a three-run homer in the sixth to set the final score at 8-1.

Jackie Riley (South Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) took the loss in the nightcap.

The Peacocks return to action at Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday. First pitch is 3 p.m.
