Saint Peter's Softball Falls Twice To Canisius In Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Canisius swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday. The Golden Griffins won the opener 5-2 and then took the nightcap 8-3.

Samantha Storms (Lake Geneva, Wisc./William Bay) paced the Peacocks (0-31, 0-8 MAAC) with two hits, including a three-run homer in the second game. Candice Koch (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored on the afternoon.

Jessica Berzins paced Canisius (14-26, 5-3 MAAC) with five hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Destiny Holani added three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored while Moriah Harris had a hit and three RBIs on the day.

In the opener, the Golden Griffins posted a run in the third and four in the seventh and held on after a seventh-inning charge by Saint Peter's.

Berzins hit an RBI single down the left field line in the third to give Canisius a 1-0 edge.

Berzins was also the catalyst for the rally in the seventh after starting the scoring with a two-run double to left center before Harris capped the four-run inning with a two-run double down the left field line.

The Peacocks posted two runs in the bottom of the inning to set the final score at 5-2. After Alyssa Cuevas (Sylmar, Calif./Bishop Alemany) walked and Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) reached on a fielder's choice, Koch smacked a two-run triple down the left field line to plate both runners. The Golden Griffins then registered a ground out and a pop out to end the game.

Canisius then rallied after Saint Peter's took an early advantage to earn the 8-3 win in the nightcap.

The Golden Griffins started the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice in the first to take a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Peacocks scored three times to grab a 3-1 edge. After Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla./Ocoee) singled up the middle to open the frame and moved to third on Koch's single to right field to put runners at the corners, Storms smacked her third homer of the season over the center field fence to give Saint Peter's a two-run lead.

Berzins hit an RBI single to shortstop in the second to trim the margin to 3-2 before a four-run fifth gave Canisius a 6-3 lead.

Holani gave the Golden Griffins the lead they would not relinquish on a two-run double to center before a third run scored on an error and Alexis Roman capped the inning with an RBI single to left field.

Canisius added a Holani RBI double and a Berzins RBI groundout in the seventh to seal the 8-3 win.

Jackie Riley (South Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) and Tiffani Lambert (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) took the losses for the Peacocks on the day.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Sunday against Niagara. First pitch is 12 p.m.
