Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y – Iona swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Wednesday. The Gaels won both games in five innings by the scores of 16-1 and 10-2.
Kirsten Kelley (Seaford, N.Y./General Douglas McArthur) paced the Peacocks (0-36, 0-13 MAAC) with three hits and an RBI while Alyssa Cuevas (Sylmar, Calif./Bishop Alemany) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored and Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) posted two hits and an RBI on the afternoon.
Kristen Turner powered Iona (11-27, 5-7 MAAC) with four hits, five runs scored and an RBI. Sarah Schultz added three hits, four runs scored and two RBIs while Kelsey Long registered four hits, two runs scored and three RBIs.
In the opener, the Gaels scored the first eight runs of the game e route to a 16-1 victory.
Iona scored seven times in the first inning to take a 7-0 lead. Ashlyn Morris got the scoring started with an RBI double to left center before Marisa Gergel coaxed a bases loaded walk and Tori Danner registered an RBI single to center. Carly Argyle had the big bang of the inning with a grand slam.
Danner increased the lead to eight runs with a run-scoring single to right center in the second.
Saint Peter's got on the scoreboard in the third with a run. Jackie Riley (South Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) walked to open the inning and moved to second when Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) walked before Kelley brought home Riley on an RBI single to center to trim the margin to 8-1.
An RBI single to center by Christine Costello and a three-run homer by Danner in the third increase the Gaels advantage to 12-1. A second four-run stanza by Iona in the fourth featured a Costello three-run homer and a Argyle sacrifice fly capped the 16-1 win.
Saint Peter's jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap before the Gaels scored eight unanswered runs to go on for the 10-2 win.
In the Peacocks' first, Cuevas doubled to right field with one out and moved to third on an error before touching home on Harrison's run-scoring single to left for a 1-0 edge.
Iona answered with three runs in the second to grab a two-run lead. Brianna King and Kelsey Long each hit an RBI double before Kimmie Chiapparelli hit a run-scoring single for a 3-1 advantage.
A four-run third increased the Gaels margin to 7-1. Long started the rally with a two-run double to left field. After a run scored on an error, Katie Newton smacked an RBI single to center. Turner then drilled a solo homer to right center in the fourth to make it a seven-game margin.
Harley Connors (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) singled to right to open the top of the fifth before Sophia Perez (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) doubled to left center to put runners at second and third with no outs. After Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla./Ocoee) walked to load the bases, Cuevas plated Connors on an RBI single to left center to cut the margin to 8-2.
Iona got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out and then Schultz ended the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth.
Carlucci and Tiffani Lambert (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) took the losses on the mound.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Saturday at home against Quinnipiac. First pitch is 12 p.m.
