Box Score 2 LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Angel Perez (Jersey City, N.J./Marist HS) capped a three-run sixth inning with a two-run single to propel Saint Peter's past Siena 3-2 in the second game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday. The Saints won the opener, 12-1.
Trailing 2-0 going into the sixth of the nightcap, Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) singled to lead off the inning before James Spadaccini (Butler, N.J./Butler) singled through the left side and then was pinch ran for by Tommy Toole (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan). Jason Midkiff (Wanaque, N.J./Paramus Catholic) singled to load the bases before Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) plated Moore with the first run on a single through the left side. Siena then recorded two outs, but Perez singled through the left side to plate Toole and Midkiff to hand the Peacocks (9-35, 4-13) a 3-2 advantage.
The Saints (16-28, 10-7 MAAC) got runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Willie Krajnik (Lyndhurst, N.J./Saint Mary) induced a pop up and a fly out to get out of the inning. AJ Celentano (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and Jake Regina (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) combined to get the final three outs in the seventh to preserve the win. Krajnik allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in six innings for his first win of the year while Regina recorded the final two outs to earn his second save.
Perez recorded two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap. Moore posted two hits and two runs scored on the afternoon while Midkiff registered four hits, an RBI and a run scored in the two games and Ciocco had two hits and an RBI in the second game.
The Jersey City team has won three of its last four league games after taking two of three against Marist last weekend.
Patrick Ortland powered the Saints with five hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Jordan Bishop recorded four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs while Jordan Folgers had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs and Fred Smart tallied three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored on the afternoon.
After winning the opening game 12-1, the Saints jumped out to a two-run lead in the nightcap only to see Saint Peter's score three times in the sixth to earn the 3-2 win.
Ortland got the scoring started with an RBI single up the middle in the second and then Bishop homered to led off the fifth for a 2-0 edge. The Jersey City team then used an RBI single by Ciocco and a two-run single by Perez to rally for the victory.
The Peacocks grabbed an early lead in the opener before Siena scored the final 12 runs to earn the victory.
In the fourth, Moore reached on an error, moved to second when Spadaccini walked and came around to score of Midkiff's RBI single to center for a 1-0 edge.
The lead did not last long after the Saints scored six times in the bottom of the frame. Dan Swain gave Siena the lead for good on a two-run single to right field before Folgers hit a two-run double to right. After Smart doubled home a run, Brian Kelly capped the six-run inning with an RBI single through the left side for a 6-1 margin.
The Saints then added six runs in the fifth to increase the advantage to 12-1. Ortland scored on a passed ball and Tyler Martis scored on an error to start the rally. Swain then hit a sacrifice fly and Smart doubled home a run before Kelly capped the inning with a two-run single down the left field line.
John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) took the loss for the Jersey City team in the opener.
Both teams wore gold shoelaces to raise awareness and funds for Pediatric Cancer through the Go 4 The Goal Foundation.
The two teams return to action on Sunday for the rubber game of the three-game series. Game time is 12 p.m.
