Manhattan Takes Two Against Saint Peter's Softball On Senior Day

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Manhattan swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Jaspers won the opener 11-0 in five innings and then took the nightcap, 8-3.

Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) paced the Peacocks (0-41, 0-18 MAAC) with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) and Nicole Feoli (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington) each added two hits and a run scored on the day.

In between games, Saint Peter's recognized the Jaspers nine seniors along with Harrison and Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla./Ocoee), who were playing their final games at Jaroschak Field on the day. Harrison recorded a two-run single up the middle in her final at-bat on her home field.

Brianna Matazinsky powered Manhattan (30-19, 14-6 MAAC) with six RBIs, two hits and two runs scored while also tossing a five-inning complete game shutout in the opener. Shannon Puthe added five hits and five runs scored while Emily Cutler added three hits, four runs scored and Elena Bowman posted two hits and three RBIs in the nightcap.

The Jaspers won the second game by a score of 8-3.

Manhattan grabbed a 3-0 lead after two innings after the Jaspers scored two in the first and one in the second. Jenn Vazquez got the scoring started with an RBI single through the right side before Lauren Pitney added a run-scoring double in the first. Bowman then added an RBI single up the middle in the second.

The Peacocks answered with a run in the bottom of the second to trim the margin to 3-1. Harrison reached on an infield single and moved to third after Alyssa Cuevas (Slymar, Calif./Bishop Alemany) hit an opposite field single. Candice Koch (Oreland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) plated Harrison on a single through the left side.

The Jaspers scored three times in the third to increase the margin to 6-1. Matazinsky brought home a run on an RBI single up the middle before two more runs came home on a two-run error. Bowman then smacked an RBI single up the middle in the fifth in to increase the margin to 7-1.

A two-run rally in the sixth by Saint Peter's trimmed the margin to 7-3. Feoli walked to open the inning before Carlucci and Storms hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Harrison singled up the middle to score Feoli and Carlucci. With the tying run on deck, Manhattan recorded a fly out, a pop out and a strikeout to end the threat.

Bowman then capped the win with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

In the opener, Manhattan defeated the Jersey City team 11-0.

The Jaspers scored seven runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. After Anna Crowley doubled home the first run of the game, Stephanie Reinhardt smacked a two-run homer before Matazinsky drilled a grand slam to center field for a seven-run advantage.

Manhattan registered three runs in the third. Vazquez plated a run after being hit with a pitch with the bases loaded. Matazinsky brought another run home on a run-scoring fielder's choice while Alexa Dawid hit a sacrifice fly to hand the Jaspers a 10-0 lead. Meredith Bryant added her first collegiate homer in the fourth to set the final score at 11-0.

Jackie Riley (South Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) and Noea Pizana (Royse City, Texas/Royse City) took the losses on the day.

Saint Peter's concludes the 2016 season at Monmouth on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
