BUFFALO, NY –The Saint Peter's men's and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) LifeStorage Swimming & Diving Championships in Buffalo, NY at the Burt Flickenger Center at Erie Community College. The men’s team finished seventh place with 246 points while the women’s team ended the championship in 10th place with 58 points. Saint Peter’s had 12 total student-athletes named to the MAAC All-Academic teams.
On the final day of action, the men’s team held firm to their seventh place spot. Igal Oren (Jersey City, NJ/Ort Kiryar Bialik) finished the 100-freestyle in 46:07, good for a fourth place finish in the event, while Eliran Epstein (Nahariya, Israel/Wester Galilee Regional) came in 12th in the same event, earning five team points for Saint Peter’s. Nicholas Riepe (Middlesex, NJ/Saint Joseph) earned a sixth place finishes in the 1650-freestyle (16:03.32), and the 200-butterfly (1:52.57), while Daniel Gayetsky (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) joined in the 200-butterfly finishing in 11th place. The quartet of Oren, Epstein, Thomas Calloni (Milan, Italy/Saint Peter's Prep), and Daniel Betts (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) took sixth in the 400-freestyle relay, closing out the event in a time of 3:05.38.
The women’s relay team of Karen Castaneda (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge High School), Alexandria Thomas (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge), Brianni Thomas (Jersey City. NJ/Dickinson High School), and Ericka Leynes (North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic Regional High School) earned 14 team points in the 400-freestyle relay for Saint Peter’s.
Of the 12 student-athletes named to the MAAC All-Academic teams, seven were on the men’s team and five were members of the women’s team.
