2019-20 Indoor Track Season Commences with Two Meets at Yale, FDU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University men's and women's track and field teams will open up their indoor season with two meets this weekend. The indoor campaign commences at the Yale Season Openers in New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday (Dec. 7) before the teams head home to nearby Hackensack where they will compete at the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights Classic for the fourth straight year.

Closing the Book on 2018-19
  • The Peacocks ran in seven events during last winter's indoor circuit and posted several strong showings, including a men's third-place and women's second-place finish at the FDU Knights Classic.
  • At the Great Dane Classic in Staten Island, current sophomore Rayshawn Johnson finished in the top-20 in the preliminaries of the men's 60-meter hurdles. Current Ohunene Albert placed in the top-15 in the women's 60-meter dash at that same meet.
  • At the MAAC Championships, Albert was one of the bright spots with a top-10 placement during the preliminary round of the women's 60-meter and 200-meter dash races, respectively.
Meet the Peacocks
  • Head coach John Marshall will be entering his third season with the program and his second full season of indoor and outdoor competition after starting in March of 2018.
  • The Peacocks are a young squad, with 26 new members combined (15 men, 11 women). Both teams consist of four seniors and 11 upperclassmen overall.
  • Among the men's seniors is sprinter Brandon Campbell, who, at the MAAC Indoor Championships last year, came in the top-15 in the men's preliminary 60-meter dash.
  • Among the underclassmen is sophomore Rayshawn Johnson who, at the Met Indoors Championship, finished third in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.61 seconds.
  • On the women's side, sophomore jumper Iria Paz enjoyed a top-15 finish in the long jump at the MAAC Championships.
  • Senior sprinter Avosuahi Albert will also be a factor for the Peacocks. She was one of 61 sprinters to finish the 400-meter dash at the Terrier Classic in under a minute.
  • Among the newcomers on the men's side are Anton Svirskyi, who was a Shore Conference Champion in high school at Brick Township and Kyle Estivene who was an eight-time letterwinner at Fanwood High School.
  • Highlighting the debutants on the women's team are rookies Nathalie Medina, who earned All-County distinction in the high jump during her high school career at Memorial High School, as well as Vernetta Gossier, an All-Essex County honoree in the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes.
The Road Ahead
  • The Peacocks will compete in 10 winter meets this season.
  • After this weekend's meets, the teams will return to the Great Dane Invite in Staten Island on January 11. They will then compete at the Ramapo Opener for the first time in three years at The Armory in New York, New York on January 17.
  • As January comes to a close, the teams will compete at the two-day Terrier Classic in Boston, Massachusetts from January 24-25.
  • When February arrives, the teams will be back in Staten Island, competing at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships from January 31 to February 1.
  • On February 8, the Peacocks return to The Armory to compete at the New York Road Runners Millrose Games.
  • The Monmouth Winter Invite follows on February 14, in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
