JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University men's and women's track & field teams will gear up for the biggest event of their indoor campaign this weekend when the Peacocks compete in the 2020 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Indoor Championships from Saturday to Sunday (Feb. 22-23) at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in New York City, where the championship will be held for the 17
th consecutive season.
The past two months of work have led to this weekend, as a young, up-and-coming Saint Peter's squad is positioned for possibly its best showing at the indoor championships in years. Entering the weekend, over 20 Peacock individuals and/or relay teams rank among the top-10 in their respective event, adding to the excitement of what could be a truly special weekend for the program.
The men's team will be aiming to win its first MAAC indoor title in its history while the women's team will look to claim a conference crown for the first time since 2013.
Who To Watch - Men
- Youth has been one of the primary storylines this indoor season on both sides and have played a huge role in the Peacocks' success thus far.
- On the men's side, freshman Jarrett Gentles has enjoyed a breakout season and was a major contributor in the 4x400 relay thus far. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that he will bring in the second-fastest 500-meter dash time thus far at 1:04.96. Gentles is also seventh in the conference in the 400 meters with a time of 49.56 seconds. He took first place at the Yale Opener and a top-10 finish at the Mets Championship.
- Other notable freshmen include Rayshawn Johnson, who enters the weekend with the fifth-best time in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.38 seconds.
- Mid-distance runner Clardo Nestor competed in seven of the eight regular season meets this season. Nestor saw gradual improvement in his times during the season particularly the 800 meters. After running a 2:01.97 800 at the Ramapo, he dipped under two minutes in the event the next three times he competed in it.
- Speaking of that 4x400-meter relay team, the third best overall time in the 4x400 relay at 3:20.47, which was run at the NYRR Millrose Games as one of the highlights of the past two months. The 4x800-meter team has run the fifth-best time thus far at the METS (9:02.06).
- Jabari Higgs-Salaam, who had a tremendous season competing in the long jump. He won two out of the four times he competed in the event this season and is coming off of a personal best performance at the Monmouth Invite, when he jumped for 6.89 meters. He has the sixth-best distance entering the weekend.
Who To Watch – Women
- Senior Avosuahi Albert has been one of the stars of the team thus far and could be in position to earn several conference accolades this weekend. She is the owner of the best time in the 400 meters entering the weekend at 56.69 seconds. Additionally, she has the second-best time in the 200-meter dash at 25.20 seconds and is fifth in the 500 meters (1:18.02).
- Fellow senior Ohunene Albert also had a stellar indoor season. She enters the weekend third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.87 seconds and seventh in the 200-meter dash at 25.66 seconds. Freshman Alexis Peterson is only two spots behind her in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.92 seconds.
- Freshman Vernetta Gosier is fourth in the MAAC in the 200 meters at 25.39 seconds. She also finished the regular season in a three-way tie for the seventh best time in the 60 meters and is ninth in the 60 hurdles event.
- Freshman Lorretta Owoh enters the MAAC Championships sixth in the triple jump (10.96 meters).
- Another freshman who has burst onto the scene this season is Janai Orders, who finished the regular season in style. She finished with PRs in the 400 meters and 60 hurdles at the Monmouth Invite.
- Junior Lovely Francois picked things up down the stretch by setting personal bests in the 500-meter dash at the Mets Invite and the 400-meter dash at the Monmouth Invite.
