Baseball Falls to LIU in Series Opener

Peacocks dropped the meeting 6-0

BROOKEVILLE, NY – One day after the biggest upset win in program history, Saint Peter's baseball returned to the pitch with a meeting at LIU. The Peacocks were unable to keep momentum rolling, dropping game one of the three-game set, 6-0.

How it Happened
  • Saint Peter's opened the game with both the leadoff hitter and number two batter getting on base. Nick Sciubba earned a walk, followed by a double down the left field line by Hunter Mason. Despite placing two on with no outs, the next three batters were retired, leaving two on base.
  • LIU scored two runs in the home half of the first, taking a 2-0 lead over the Peacocks.
  • The Peacocks would add one hit in each of the next two innings, and only two hits over the game's final six innings.
  • Although the offense did not score, following the opening inning, Saint Peter's held the Sharks off the board for six consecutive innings, until the eighth when LIU erupted for four additional runs, giving the home squad a 6-0 cushion.

Inside the Numbers
  • In the afternoon meeting, Saint Peter's posted five total hits.
  • John Gavura had the most productive outing, leading the team with a .750 batting average on 3-for-4 hits while adding a triple. Mason and Joey Vitiello both made the other two hits for the Peacocks, with Vitiello earning two stolen bases.
  • Right-handed pitcher Joe Albunia (0-2) made the start and received the decision after 3.0 innings of work on the mound. After giving up the two runs in the opening inning, he held LIU runless over the next pair of innings.
  • In relief, righty Stephen Carbonara put in 4.0 innings of scoreless work, only giving up two hits while striking out one batter.

Coach's Quotes – Lou Proietti
  • "Our pitchers did a good job keeping us in the game for eight innings."
  • "Offensively we needed to capitalize in the first inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd and no one out."
  • "Give credit to their starter, I thought he did a really good job keeping our guys off balance."
  • "Hopefully we can come out on Saturday ready to go."

On Deck
  • The Peacocks and Sharks continue the series this weekend with games on Saturday (Mar. 7) and Sunday (Mar. 8).
