Softball Drops Friday Doubleheader against Fairfield

Peacocks lose pair of road games to Stags in Connecticut

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Saint Peter's University softball team dropped its twin bill against Fairfield on Friday afternoon in Connecticut. The first game went to the Stags via an 8-2 decision after the Peacocks started the day with a 1-0 lead. Game 2 proved to be a much closer match between the two teams, after Saint Peter's was able to tie the score up at 4-4 following an explosive fourth inning. The tie would remain until the bottom of the seventh frame, when Fairfield scored the winning run off a costly error by the Saint Peter's defense.

Game 1 Notes:
  • Sophomore Brandi Feeney started off hot against the Stags, hitting a solo shot over the left field fence in the top of the second inning to put the Peacocks up 1-0 over the Stags.
  • Efficient hitting and baserunning from the hosts then erased Saint Peter's lead in the bottom of the third inning, as Fairfield posted five runs in the frame to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Stags managed to add three more runs to their tally in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Saint Peter's entered the final frame trailing 8-1.
  • Junior Marissa Morales then recorded her first RBI of the day in the top of the seventh inning, hitting a single to center field, which brought in classmate Katie Sciglimpaglia for the score. The rally ended there though, as Fairfield secured the 8-2 victory.
Game 2 Notes:
  • The Stags were able to get on the board early in Friday's rematch, posting a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, granting them a 4-0 lead heading into the third frame.
  • Neither side garnered a hit through the third inning, but the Peacocks were able to answer back in the fourth, posting four runs off combined efforts from Feeney, Morales, and sophomore Cara McNulty, which leveled the score at 4-4.
  • Morales was able to get into scoring position in the top of the seventh inning, reaching second base after a sacrifice-bunt from junior captain Anja Kane, but would be left stranded.
  • After the Stags were able to advance runners to first and second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, a crucial error from the Saint Peter's defense opened the door and allowed the hosts to take the narrow 5-4 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Feeney's home run in Game 1 is the sophomore's first of the season and the fourth of her career.
  • Junior pitcher Christina Colon enjoyed another strong outing on the mound in the day's second game, coming in as relief and throwing for just over four innings while allowing only five hits, one run, and securing two strikeouts.
  • Both Feeney and Morales each finished the day with two RBI's through both games against the Stags.
  • McNulty paced the team in baserunning on Friday with two successful steals in Game 2.
Coach's Quotes - Chris Stelma:
  • "Another quality day of softball. The second game was a bit of a heartbreaker...but it's those close games that are going to make you a better team."
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks remain in Fairfield as the team gets set for the second part of its series against the Stags on Saturday, April 24 with games beginning at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
