Softball Defeated by Monmouth in Tuesday Doubleheader

Peacocks drop twin bill to Hawks on the road

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Saint Peter's University softball team traveled to West Long Branch on Tuesday afternoon for its second doubleheader of the season against hOURglass rival Monmouth. The Hawks ultimately secured the win in both games, defeating the Peacocks 12-2 in six innings in the day's first contest, followed by a 4-0 decision in the rematch.

Game 1 Notes:
  • Monmouth started Tuesday off with a three-run first inning in Game 1, and would extend their lead to 4-0 by the end of the second inning.
  • The Hawks collected four more runs over the next two innings, as the scoreboard read 8-0 to the hosts as the game entered the fifth inning.
  • The fifth inning saw some life from the Peacocks though, as Sophie Wilson recorded her first hit of the day and singled to the Monmouth pitcher.
  • Freshman Madison Simone then entered to pinch run for Wilson, and advanced to second following a ground out from classmate Maiah Skakal.
  • A single to second base from junior captain Anja Solveig Kane then created an opportunity for Simone to score, giving the Peacocks their first run of the day.
  • Marissa Morales recorded an RBI of her own on the next at-bat, grounding out to third base but bringing in Kane in the process.
  • The Peacocks could not add more runs in the sixth however, and a four-run inning from the opposition, including a three-run home run would end it at 12-2.
Game 2 Notes:
  • Despite both sides getting runners in scoring position early on in Game 2, both Saint Peter's and Monmouth went scoreless through the first four innings in Tuesday's rematch.
  • A pair of runs from the Hawks in both the fifth and six innings would then grant the home team a 4-0 lead.
  • With two outs left in the top of the seventh inning, Skakal recorded the team's first hit of the day with a single to left field, denying the no-hitter for Monmouth's pitcher. The Hawks would then go on to secure the 4-0 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Kane, Skakal, Wilson, and sophomore Brandi Feeney each recorded a hit in Tuesday's doubleheader.
  • Additionally, Kane was the lone Peacock to finish the day with an RBI, while she and Simone finished with the team's only runs of the day.
  • Simone, Wilson, and junior Katie Sciglimpaglia also each earned a walk in the twin bill.
Coach's Quotes - Chris Stelma:
  • "We got a real big start out of Syd Senerchia in Game 2 today."
  • "We are showing a big amount of character as a team this year."
  • "While frustrating to lose so many close games, it's a different feeling to compete in every inning and I'm happy for these young ladies."
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks will get set to head to Marist on Thursday, April 29 for a doubleheader against the Red Foxes. The games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. start times.
