Marquart Goes Yard Twice; Baseball Splits with Manhattan to Close Season on High Note

Peacocks win game 2 to split Sunday’s doubleheader

RIVERDALE, NY – After allowing a walk-off win in game one, Saint Peter's baseball toppled Manhattan College 8-7 in game two on Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season. The Peacocks end the 2021 campaign with a 4-24 overall and MAAC record.

How It Happened
  • Andrew Connor opened up Saint Peter's scoring with a solo home run blast to left field to put SPU up 1-0 in the first inning.
  • Peacock ace Ian Concevitch put up consecutive no hit innings in the first and second before two runs were scored in the third by Manhattan.
  • In the top of the fourth, with runners on second and third, Brad Barkema hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Joey Vitiello from third to tie the meeting at 2-2.
  • Saint Peter's eventually loaded the bases in the inning and Connor would draw a walk to put the Peacocks ahead 3-2 before the frame would end.
  • The Peacock then extended the lead to 4-2 in the fifth, with a sacrifice fly by Chris Marquart, bringing in Vitello from third for the run.
  • After the Jaspers added one run in the bottom of the fifth, SPU held onto the 4-3 lead heading to the seventh and final inning of the matchup.
  • Manhattan's leadoff batter would hit the game-tying home run followed by a walk-off sacrifice fly to end the game with a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat for Saint Peter's. 
Notes
  • Connor went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Peacocks, with his second home run of the year, two RBIs and one run scored.
  • Vitiello also picked up two hits and scored a pair of runs in the game.
  • Barkema and Marquart each produced one RBI, while Kyle Mahady also scored a run for SPU.
  • On the mound, Concevitch (1-3), pitched 6.1 innings and fell in the defeat while Manhattan's Jose De La Cruz (2-1) earned the winning decision.

How It Happened
  • In the final game of the regular season, Marquart hit a leadoff home run to give Saint Peter's a 1-0 lead in the first inning again.
  • The Jaspers would respond with five runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 5-1 advantage over the Peacocks after one inning.
  • Despite falling behind by four-runs, SPU got right back to its offense, putting together three runs in the top half of the second inning.
  • The big inning began with a run scored by Nick Font by way of a throwing error on Manhattan following a single by Barkema; cutting the deficit to 5-2.
  • Mike DiPede would drive in the next two runs by way of a two RBI single to right field, scoring Barkema and Mahady and pulling the Peacocks to within one run.
  • After a scoreless third, Saint Peter's would take the lead in the fourth, scoring two more runs.
  • Marquart sent his second home run of the game, a two-run bomb to right field, propelling the Peacocks to a 6-5 lead.
  • The score remained the same until the seventh, when Saint Peter's added two insurance runs by way of an RBI single by Vitiello and an eventual balk by Manhattan scoring Sam Delcollo from third to extend the lead to 8-5.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Manhattan attempted to spoil Saint Peter's day with another walk-off win, but after the Jaspers scored two runs and cut the game to a single run, freshman pitcher Matthew Dubois struck out the final batter of the game to seal the victory.
Notes
  • Marquart hit 2-for-5 at the plate, producing three RBIs and two runs scored by way of his multi-home run afternoon.
  • DiPede was right behind Marquart, driving in two runs of his own, while Mahady crossed home twice for two runs scored.
  • Delcollo also came up with a pair of hits for Saint Peter's, going 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored.
  • Dubois (1-4) earned the first win of his career, going 8.1 innings in relief, striking out 11 batters, the most by any Peacock pitcher this season.
