A Year Unlike Any Other

It's never easy being a student-athlete at the NCAA level.

Of course, when one thinks of collegiate athletics, they might first think of all of the demands that come with the sport that students-athletes are competing in: the early-morning lifts, the long practices, the traveling from state to state and everything in between. But what truly makes student-athletes outliers and extraordinary aren't often what happens on the playing surface, but in the classroom. The first word in student-athlete carries an academic connotation, after all, and in order to even compete in one's respective field of play, that person must pass certain academic thresholds to maintain eligibility and assure that they are on track from an academic standpoint.

Not only did Saint Peter's University student-athletes display dominance in the classroom over the past academic year: they did so while navigating through all of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of everything they already had to balance, Peacock student-athletes were subjected to regular COVID-19 testing and restrictions that hampered the traditional college experience all to assure that their teams would have the ability to compete at some point.

Fortunately, Saint Peter's University's student-athletes showed resolve, dedication and determination and went above and beyond in a number of ways. Regardless of how each varsity program's fared on their respective playing surface, what the University's student-athletes accomplished in the classroom was arguably more impressive.

Setting New Benchmarks… Nationally

In November, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) Data on Tuesday, and Saint Peter's University student-athletes set yet another single-year GSR high water mark at 95 percent for the 2013-14 cohort year.

Additionally, a school-record eight programs attained a perfect GSR score, which was based on the four entering classes between 2010 to 2013: men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, women's cross country/track & field and women's volleyball. The only other time that Saint Peter's saw eight of its athletics programs post a perfect GSR rate was in the 2011-12 cohort year.

Taking a closer look, the graduation rate of 11 programs improved or matched their rating from last year, with three teams improving their score:

Baseball: 85-95% (+10%)
Men's Basketball: Remained at 100%
Men's Golf: Remained at 100%
Men's Soccer: 89-91% (+2%)
Men's Swimming: Remained at 100%
Women's Basketball: Remained at 100%
Women's Cross Country/Track: 95-100% (+5%)
Women's Soccer: Remained at 93%
Softball: Remained at 100%
Women's Swimming: Remained at 100%
Women's Volleyball: Remained at 100%

Saint Peter's student-athletes once again also posted a higher federal graduation rate than the national average.

A Sensational Fall Semester

Despite the uncertainties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Saint Peter's University student-athletes still managed to put together one of their most impressive performances in the classroom in recent memory last semester as part of a remarkable fall semester in terms of academic performance.

Nearly 200 student-athletes – 172 to be precise – boasted grade-point averages of 3.0 and higher during the fall slate. Additionally, 85 student-athletes saw their GPAs slotted in the 3.5-3.99 range, and going even further, 26 of those student-athletes were flawless with perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Cumulatively, Peacock student-athletes combined to post a department-wide GPA of 3.3 to round out an outstanding first half of the academic year.

The women's volleyball team topped all varsity programs with a department-best 3.79 GPA in the fall, as four of its student-athletes had 4.0s – tied with the women's swimming team for most 4.0 student-athletes on a single team. Four squads – women's basketball, men's soccer, softball and men's swimming & diving – had three student-athletes post 4.0 GPAs, while 12 programs posted team-wide GPAs of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester, upping the current department-wide cumulative GPA to 3.325 in the process.

Finishing Strong in the Spring

After a phenomenal fall effort in the classroom, Saint Peter's student-athletes bested their already-stellar performances from the previous semester with an even more sensational spring (2021) slate.

Highlighted by 123 individuals being named to the Dean's List by way of registering grade-point averages (GPA) of 3.5 or higher -- a nearly 10-percent increase from the fall -- Saint Peter's University student-athletes continue to prove their dedication not only to their respective athletic programs but to their studies at the University, as well.

More impressively, 167 student-athletes closed out the spring semester with GPAs of 3.0 and higher, with the aforementioned 123 of them falling in the 3.5+ or higher category to earn Dean's List accolades. Finally, 28 of those student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs, two more than the fall semester.

Cumulatively, Peacock student-athletes combined to post a department-wide GPA of 3.31, a slight increase from last semester, to conclude an outstanding academic year on and off the playing surface.

For the second semester in a row, 14 of the department's 16 varsity programs registered team-wide term GPAs of 3.0 or higher; it was the women's volleyball team again leading the way with a 3.73 cumulative semester GPA thanks to three student-athletes finishing with perfect 4.0s. Both the men's and women's swimming & diving programs shared the department single-team high with five student-athletes earning 4.0 GPAs on both sides (10 total). Both softball and men's swimming led the department with 15 Dean's List selections apiece (3.5+ GPAs), while nine total programs improved team-wide GPAs from last semester to this.

Congrats, Graduates!

All of that hard work in the classroom over two of the most challenging academic years in recent memory culminated in late May and early June, when Saint Peter's University officially celebrated the Classes of 2020 and 2021 with a series of small, in-person Commencement activities.

Saint Peter's student-athletes who are members of the previous two graduating classes were among the entire university student body who were honored over the course of two weeks with ceremonies that were held in Duncan Family Sky Room in the Mac Mahon Student Center.

Additionally, virtual ceremonies were held for the 129th and 130th Commencement in late May and early June, each of which featured Commencement addresses by Rev. Gregory Boyle S.J., and Carlos A. Medina, Esq., respectively.

The Saint Peter's University Athletics Department congratulates every student-athlete who overcame countless obstacles presented by the COVID-19 pandemic over the last two academic years that was honored over the last two weeks, as well as the entire Saint Peter's University student body for their hard work and dedication to their studies.

Despite those challenges, the past two years have seen historic accomplishments both in the classroom and in competition by Peacock student-athletes, and support from Peacock Nation and beyond promises to keep that momentum rolling when the 2021-22 academic year begins in approximately two months.

ON A ROLL

The final major academic accolade from the 2020-21 academic year came in late July, when Saint Peter's University saw 143 of its student-athletes, in addition to nine more Esports members, named to the 2020-21 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll after their exceptional academic performance over the past year. The conference unveiled the full ledger of nearly 3,000 student-athletes league-wide who earned that distinction this afternoon.

That quantity of student-athletes represents the second-highest number of total selections since the inception of the award; only the 2019-20 academic year had a better showing in terms of total Peacocks earning MAAC Academic Honor Roll status.

The 143 Saint Peter's honorees were among a conference-record 2,963 student-athletes earning spots on the honor roll, representing the 14th straight academic year that saw an increase from the previous one. In addition to the 2,963 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll, an additional 63 Esports student-athletes are honored as well. Esports is recognized as an official MAAC Club Sport, with the conference awarding three championships this past year in Overwatch, Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

To be eligible for the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The Academic Honor Roll is open to both full-time and associate members in the MAAC. All 23 conference-sponsored sports are represented.

We hope you enjoyed the Top Moments of 2020-21; see you in August!
