JERSEY CITY, N.J.- The Saint Peter's University baseball team exploded for a season-high 18 hits as the Peacocks defeated Wagner College 16-11 in a non-conference clash.
The Peacocks improve to 6-32 overall while the Seahawks fall to 21-18.
Saint Peter's struck first as junior
Sam Haney (Lake Oswego, Ore.) singled in a run in the opening inning for a 1-0 lead. Wagner rallied with two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
The Peacocks rallied with eight runs over the next two innings, including a six-run third. Saint Peter's loaded the bases with one out as junior
Rece Stapp (Keller, Texas) was hit by a pitch to force in one run. Junior
Joey Vitiello (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and senior
Jeff Massicotte (Meriden, Conn.) singled to drive in a run each and keep the bases loaded. Junior
Nick Markantonatos (Portland, Ore.) cleared the bases with a three-run double to increase the score to 7-2.
Saint Peter's added two runs in the fourth as Vitiello singled in one run, while Massicotte drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Wagner battled back with four runs in the fifth and added one run in the sixth to cut the score to 9-7. The Peacocks added five runs in the sixth as Vitello drove in two runs with a single, while Saint Peter's followed with three straight doubles. Massicotte, senior
Anthony Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.) and Markantonatos all doubled in three consecutive at-bats as the Peacocks pushed their lead to 14-7.
Saint Peter's added a run in the seventh, while junior
Jack Eichler (Verona, N.J.) singled in a run in the eighth.
Massicotte went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Vitiello went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Markantonatos drove in four runs in the win.
Junior
Austin Rohfing (Bel Air, Md.) earned the win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on no hits.
The Peacocks travel to western New York for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference three-game series against Canisius College starting on Friday, April 28 at 3 pm.
