Pitts Homers, Drives in Two in Game One Win as Softball Splits Manhattan

JERSEY CITY, N.J.- Saint Peter's University softball sophomore Dakota Pitts (Abington, Md.) blasted the go-ahead homerun in a game one win as the Peacocks split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Manhattan College. The Peacocks won the opener 7-6, while the Jaspers took the nightcap 7-2.
 
The Peacocks move at 29-19 and 8-10 in the MAAC while the Jaspers stand at 11-35 and 6-11 in conference play.
 
In the opener, the Jaspers got on the board with a run in the second inning.
 
The Peacocks rallied back in the third with a six-run outburst. Senior Cara McNulty (Middletown, N.J.) doubled in two runs to put Saint Peter's in front 2-1. Freshman Tai Turner (Havre De Grace, Md.) tripled in a run, while sophomore Jess Forte (Middlesex, N.J.) singled in a run. Senior Brandi Feeney (Cicero, N.Y.) capped the inning with an RBI groundout.
 
Manhattan answered in the fifth as they loaded the bases twice in the inning, scoring five runs to even the score at 6-6.
 
Saint Peter's battled back in their half of the inning as Pitts connected on a lead-off, go-ahead solo homerun to give the Peacocks a one-run lead. Turner went 3-for-3 in the opener, while Pitts went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Freshman Sydney Palmer (Fellsmere, Fla.) picked up her ninth win of the season, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out one.
 
The Jaspers took the early lead in the nightcap with three runs over the first two innings. Graduate Anja Solveig Kane (Manchester Township, N.J.) drove in the first for the Peacocks with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
 
Manhattan added to their lead with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to push ahead 7-1. Saint Peter's tacked on a run in the seventh as Forte doubled in a run as part of her 3-for-3 game two effort.
 
The Peacocks conclude conference play as they host Quinnipiac University in a MAAC doubleheader on Saturday, May 6 at noon. The program's seniors will be honored on Saturday as part of Senior Day for the softball team.
