NEWARK, NJ–The Saint Peter's men's swimming team wrapped up day one of the NJIT Invite on Friday evening.
Juan Nunez led the Peacocks with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. After the opening day of competition, NJIT leads the field with 451 points, followed by Howard (316) and Saint Peter's (155).
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS
The Peacocks opened the meet in the 200-yard medley relay, where two Saint Peter's squads competed. The A relay — Nunez, V
ictor Fuentes, Tristan Raso, and Jeff Thompson — finished fifth overall with a time of 1:36.15. NJIT's B squad claimed first with a mark of 1:32.72, anchored by sophomore Vincent Coppola's fastest split of the race (20.78).
The SPU B relay —
Austin Carducci, Ean Vellescig, Taj Seton-Martin, and Emerson Tofel — recorded a final time of 1:42.25, with Tofel swimming the team's fastest split at 23.80.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Nunez notched the Peacocks' top finish of the day, placing second overall with a time of 4:45.96, just four seconds behind NJIT's Keagan Wooding (4:41.85). Freshman
Patch Robinson impressed in his collegiate debut, finishing fifth in the 17-swimmer field at 4:49.61.
NJIT swept the podium in the 200-yard individual medley, led by Pawel Drzymala (1:53.84). Freshman Vellescig was Saint Peter's top finisher, placing 14th out of 18 competitors with a time of 2:00.67.
Thompson narrowly missed a top-10 finish in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in at 22.77 — just 0.38 seconds shy of tenth place.
In the final event of the night, the 800-yard freestyle relay, Saint Peter's A team — Nunez, Robinson, Thompson, and Carducci — placed fourth out of seven with a time of 7:14.85. The Peacocks' B relay — Vellescig,
Dean Lliguicota, Seton-Martin, and Tofel — followed with a time of 7:53.25.

Day two of the NJIT Invite begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Men 200 Freestyle Relay. Saint Peter's will open its session with the 400-yard individual medley, featuring Vellescig, Carducci, Tofel, Seton-Martin, Nunez, and Robinson.
