SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Saint Peter's baseball team fell to Seton Hall in a tight 3-4 game on Wednesday at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Peacocks almost came back late in the game, but the Pirates responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
The Peacocks (7-16, 3-6 MAAC) trailed the Pirates (10-15) for most of the game despite scoring the first run in the top of the fourth. Seton Hall
Cam Martindale started off hot on the mound in the first two innings, going through seven batters and letting up just one hit. He was then replaced by
David Delgadillo, who had a very similar statline with seven batters and one hit allowed. Delgadillo pitched two innings and only gave up a single run.
Ashby Vining led the Peacocks with three hits on the day. He also accounted for one of three Saint Peter's runs.
Tommy Kendrick also had a good day with two hits, including one double and a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Peacocks and Pirates went scoreless through the first three innings as pitching for both teams were on point. Saint Peter's put an end to the drought after
Brendon Wilson reached home on a throwing error by Seton Hall.
The Pirates wasted no time tying things back up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, also on a throwing error. They then took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth with a triple that scored one runner. The same player that hit the triple made it home on the next play to put Seton Hall up 3-1.
Saint Peter's struggled to get on base in the sixth and seventh innings but found life in the top of the eighth. Kendrick led off with a double before Vining came up to bat. Vining hit a single to advance Kendrick to third. Kendrick then scored after an at bat from
Tyler DeClusin. Vining scored not too long after on a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Smith, tying the ballgame at 3-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Seton Hall answered with a sacrifice bunt to score a runner who was on third. The Pirates led 4-3 going into the ninth right before the first three Saint Peter's players got out.
